Christian women's clothing

I know in the southern/central parts of Kerala that Christian women wear chattayum mundum.

What would Christian in Northern Kerala wear? Particularly in Kasaragod, or even South Canara district of Karnataka (Ullal, Mangalore etc.) Mostly in Kasaragod or northern Kerala.

And my wife was explaining that in her particular sect of Christians, and I believe all would be this way, that only virgins wear all white.

Does chattayum mundum have to be all white?

Thank you for your, or wife's input.

Since I've never heard of what you refer to, I didn't know there were Christian clothes styles, I googled it and found the style you describe and a nice little video. Apparently, it's the Syrian Christian style http://www.indiavideo.org/kerala/lan...-women-643.php
I am not sure why you are asking, if it's just out of curiosity or if you want your wife to have the proper clothes. I would suggest if it's the latter, you just buy them when you get there.

Probably someone in the know will answer the rest of your questions.

Chattayum refers to a shirt or tunic. Mundum refers to a dhoti or lungi( wrapped around the waist)worn much like men do. Chattai's( plural) can be white or printed, or any other color. Mundus are typically white.

In north Kerala the Christian women wear Saree and blouse like Hindus. I have not heard about any other dresses. Waiting for more answers.

Living next to the biggest church in asia, I have noticed that chattayum mundum are usually only worn by the old women, even this is going out of style, and being replaced by white sarees.

Slightly hesitant to jump in when answers have been given by people who live in Kerala... but the other side of this coin is that lots of non-Christians wear white too.

I thought white was for mourning and widows Except for that Syrian Christian outfit in Kerala.

Find someone wearing a white salwar kameez with a gold stripe; go up to them and say, "you're from Kerala, aren't you?" They will be. I've done this in London

(mind you, I do not know if that dress-based-on-a-trad-sari-pattern is still in fashion --- but I bet there are a few of them around).

Goan Catholic brides wear white saris or dresses much like in the West. More recently they may wear other colors if they marry a person from another faith or region.

Here is a link with some pictures

Thanks for all the great photos of saris and wedding dresses!

Now I remember why I always think Goa is so visually boring and uninspiring when I'm there. It's so tame compared to the fabulously vibrant colors in other parts of India. The "dresses" that so many women wear look like 1950s dowdy house dresses! The sari's are OK but seem more muted.

This is my opinion based on my own visits to Goa and nothing to do with anything other than my personal observations. Goa just has a different "vibe" and always has, including womens clothes. I know everywhere in India has it's own style differences, it's just that Goa's local "fashion" has always stood out to me (not in a good way). Always exceptions, of course.

Goa is definitely less visually boring than North Carolina or NJ for that matter.

Actually, Western North Carolina is gorgeous and not at all visually boring. It's part of the reason we retired here after living 35 years in New Jersey! http://www.visitnc.com/?gclid=CLP7wq...FYWV7Qod6zr_CQ
