can I travel from Ooty to Munnar in one day...

I am considering a road trip from Banglore to Mysore to Ooty to Munnar to Thekkady to Kovalam (TRV). (Not sure it if is practice to include cochin in this somehow.) Is it possible to drive from Ooty to Munnar in one day? what is the distance in KM? And is the road scenic? (I find all travel in india quite rewarding so it doesn't have to be too too much.)

After reaching TRV I would let the car go (paying the return KM charges to Banglore) and take a train or fly to Goa for onward leg.

Any suggestions welcome. My thought is if I reach Ooty, it makes less sense to return to Banglore (long drive) just to catch a flight to cochin to then take a car to Munnar.

Thanks for any thoughts. If any opinions regarding how you would rank the visits between Ooty, Munnar and Thekkday I will appreciate it as well.

Gautam,

1) Yes in one day you could do ooty to Munnar [Around 250 kms ]but May be, From ooty, you could ask your driver to wait in Mettupalaiyam railway station and board the first Toy train and do the Scenic Journey between ooty to Mettupalaiyam. This train will reach around 1pm in Mettupalaiyam and then continue your journey in your car to COimbatore [40 kms] It will be around 3 pm then .May be you could stay for the night in Coimbatore and then start your journey next day early morning [Say 5 or 6 am] which will give you ample time to Enjoy the Scenery from Udumalpettai until you reach Munnar... At many a places on this circuit [Coimbatore to Munnar. Except the first 1 hour which is just plains] , you could stop to enjoy the views as such which you will totally miss out if you try to do it in the same day !..

2)And not sure on your group composition and if you want to cut down the spendings / Or in budget, You could Board Directly Volvo A/C from Bangalore to Ooty. After Exploring Ooty, get the toy train to Mettupalaiyam followed by 1 Hr Journey in bus to Coimbatore . Here you could hire a Taxi [ Please Search for post by "Snonymous - IMer" .. She gave one Mobile number of a reliable driver in Coimbatore which she used extensively]. Make trip to Munnar + Local Exploring and even you could explore Thekkady as well [as it's just 3 Hours Or 100 Kms from Munnar] and ask this driver to Drop you in Kottayam Or Ernakulam JN from where you could get any of the Many trains passing to Trivandrum ! .. This way you could Avoid the "To & Fro Charges between Bangalore to TVM" for the Taxi !!!!!

3)I visited all the 3 places and I would say My Order is Munnar , Ooty , Thekkady .. In Short , Munnar - For Pleasant Climate + Tea Plantations+ Exceptional Views all Over, Thekkady - For Plantation Visits + Wildlife Sighting from Boat, Ooty -For Cool Climate + Nice Views + Toy Train ride .. Just My opinion..

Hope this helps & If you need more info on any of the above, Please Post !

Regards
