Bus travel from Kerala to Mysore

Has anyone travelled via bus (regular and/or tourist) from Kerala to Mysore?

I will most likely leave from Cochin. I did extensive travel in Vietnam on tourist coaches and found it quite agreeable. I liked having the time to look at the countryside and read.

I hear bus travel in the south is a bit easier than the North? Is this true?

Expect to commit about 12 hours to this ride. How much should this journey cost?

Thanks.

There is a small reservation counter for the Mysore buses inside the local state bus station. There are a few buses from there to Mysore. Ask for the Karnataka State Reservation counter. It would cost you about 300 to 500 rs based on the type of buses. Most of them start in the afternoon and reaches Mysore in the morning. Not very comfortable in comparison with the train, as its about 9-10hrs journey. But there are no direct train from cochin to Mysore. South bus travel is better than north.

There are direct trains from Cochin to Bangalore, no stopovers in Mysore. Would rather do a direct bus trip to Mysore intead of training it to Banglore then taking a '-hour taxi trip to Mysore.

It is technically possible to travel from Cochin to Bangalore and then to Mysore by train. But it’s a bit circular and long. There are plenty of busses from Bangalore to Mysore.
Mysore is close to the kerala state border and Bangalore is a bit inside.

There are many places in between Cochin and Mysore.
Trichur (about 2hrs from cochin) – mainly a big town with a large of temples and all
Plaghat (about 2hrs from Trichur) – a mid size town
Coimbatore (about 2 hrs from palghat) – a mid size town, a hub to the hill station Ooty (bluemountain)

Varkala!. There are many ‘lonely’ beaches in the north of kerala. But to a tourist I would recommend Varkala. This beach now looks like how the ‘famous’ kovalam has been when I was a kid!!

I think beach is from Kerala. Any comments beach ???

There are daily private busses leaving Cochin to Bangalore everyday. These are mostly vovlo made ones and some well refurbrished luxury ones too. I think this is what nycparis was refering to from his exp in vietnam. I am not sure if he can manage in the govt busses mentioned by beach as the journey is quite cumbersome in the longwinding hill route in a very basic government bus.

cochin - mysore

Karnataka bus tickets are available in a small kiosk outside the State bus station.

No volvo buses are running from Cochin to Mysore from the state oned bus stand.

an alternative suggestion

Take train to Kozhikode(calicut) stay overnight in calicut next day take a day bus to mysore .Enjoy the scenic way and the hills.Sultans batters is also a small town with comfy places to stay with goo dfood at reasonable prices .
