Budget accomodation in Trivandrum, Kerala

Me and a friend will be arriving in Trivandrum, Kerala on 27th March, and thought it would be a good idea to book a place to stay for the first night. I have absolutely no idea what to expect from accomodation in India, so would like some advice.

As young travellers we are looking for budget accomodation, and at first glance Pravin Tourist Home (anyone been there or heard of it) seemed to be recommended as cheap and clean.

Any advice would be greatley appreciated.

Hi,

I can personally recommend the YMCA in Trivandrum, it is around 400 rupees per night with hot shower, tv and massive rooms. The staff are friendly and they let couples stay. It's easy to find - it's right next to the british library.

There is a string of budget hotels near the train/bus station area called Thampanoor. However, if you are interested in Kovalam.. you may as well head straight to Kovalam for the night as it is about 15km from the train station.

Cheers for all the suggestions. Why go to Kovalam and not stay in Trivandrum?

Sea, sand, restaurants, scantily-clad foreign women...

More hotels (all budgets) than you could shake a stick at (whatever that mean!)...

Many would say why visit Trivandrum and stay in the city!

Kovalam is very close, easy to access Trivandrum for shopping etc.

So Kovalam is a smaller town just south of Trivandrum? Definitely an option. It's good to hear about these places, so even if we don't stay there, definitely give it a visit.

Yes, but at 15-20 mins drive, you could almost describe it as Trivandrum's beach.

Trivandrum vs. Varkala

Hi,
I am arriving in trivandrum on March 11, late (around 10:30 pm). I am planning to stay there two nights. I have gone back and forth about whether to take a place in Trivandrum, or go on up to Varkala. (I am not interested in Kovalam, too touristy).

What would anyone else recommend? I am leaning toward staying in Trivandrum, as it is only for two nights and it would be nice not to have to travel far by car once we arrive at 10:30 by plane. In Trivandrum, I am look at Graceful Homestay or Varikatt Heritage - is anyone familiar with either of these places?

Of course I keep hearing amazing things about Villa Jacaranda in Varkala. That will take an hour from Trivandrum once we arrive, so we wouldn't get there until 11:30 or midnight. Is it much more worth going ahead and going on up to Varkala?

Any thoughts or experiences? thank you!!
