Bolgatty Palace vs Mermaid Hotel Hi I will be staying at Cochi for one day. Confused between Hotel Bolgatty palace ( KTDC) and Mermaid island.. KTDC is prime property but feedback is very bad about their service. Visiting Kerala first time.. any advice regarding this?

KTDC hotel's generally have poor service compared to those in private hands. KTDC employees are civil servants after all! However, in the more upmarket places they have managed to weed out most of the really useless employees. None of these people ever get fired (as it is a Gorrrrment job), but they then get made a waiter in of the seedy 'Beer Bar's' that KTDC also runs. Of the two that you mention, I do not know the Mermaid, but I have walked around the grounds of the Bolgatty Palace Hotel quite a few times. It really does have a spectacular setting, and the staff always seemed friendly enough! However, some of the older buildings could do with more maintenance. The other one that I liked (but could not afford) is "The Brunton Boatyard" which is very ideally located in Fort Cochin central area. This place is actually a building which is probably only around 10 years old now, but it was built in the old style and full of antique furniture. Charming... but I think it is madly expensive to stay there! Of course if you can afford it, the setting of the Taj Malabar is also amazing!

Brunton's Boatyard is the most expensive Indian hotel I have ever stayed in. The building is great,a nd beautifully designed, as Dacoit Chief says, to look as if it has been there as long as it's neighbour has. You can watch the harbour from your window/balcony, and may well see Dolphins. I was not that impressed with the food. Fort Cochin has, I think, a growing number of hotels, both modern and "heritage". I noticed (on a day visit a few weeks ago) that Neemrana group has an interesting looking property there, The Tower House.

That Tower house place looks great! I even think I know exactly where it is. I once stayed at a little place just around the corner. It is a different sort of place (more of a homestay), but also highly recommendable. http://www.delightfulhomestay.com/

Dashed into a place just around the corner that we then realised seemed ominously deserted --- but the food was delicious ![]() | |
