Can anyone help?
Want to take me boyfriend out to dinner in his first night in India and Im happy to pay a bit more than usual .... Where would you recommend? I have been told that Malabar house is excellent, but would like some more suggestions/recommendations. Seafood has to be on the menu. Thanks a lot! |

My favourite is the restaurant at the Grand Hotel in MG Road, Ernakulam.
The Keralan cuisine is superb, and the place is always full of locals - the best recommendation you can get! Brunton Boatyard's restaurant lacks ambiance. I have neer seen it with more than a handful of guests in it - maybe because of the ridiculous prices they charge. It is stupidly expensive and being ripped off leaves a nasty taste in one's mouth. The Abad Plaza is rather run down and I wouldn't recommend it. Also, they don't serve alcohol. Bimbi's, Jos Junction, MG Road, Ernakulam is a sort of fast-food restaurant. Hugely popular and inexpensive. They also do a great selection of shakes, ice creams and Indian sweets. Bimbi's in NOT for a special occasion, but I mention it because it is well worth a visit! So the best recommendation is the Grand Hotel. Great food, service and ambiance. They also have a large car park.

Brunton Boatyard is a very luxurious place in a wonderful location. I think it is also the most expensive hotel I've ever stayed in!
It's a great place to stay, and I've been there, two, maybe three times. The service is good --- they even managed to get my credit card to me in Kovalam a couple of days later, when I'd left it behind checking out. I wouldn't, however, go out of my way to eat there. [edit --- having seen John.sw's post] Yes, I suppose Brunton's is too expensive... Abad Plaza must have been new, or almost, when I stayed there a few years ago. half of the lights in the restaurant didn't work, which made for a pleasant ambience, actually. Generally though, despite its pristine (at the time) polished brass rails, glass and gadget-laden rooms, it completely lacked character. It is also the only place I've had to send back a pot of tea as being utterly undrinkable! I don't know if I would want to do three or four days in Kochi. Two, maybe, or three...
