Bekal Beach, Kerala or Ullal Beach, Karnataka?
Which is better? I'd like a decent (not too fancy, not too shabby) little place on the beach for a few days. Will be traveling from Madikeri and would like the trip to be as easy as possible. Which would you choose?

When we stayed in Mangalore we made a day excursion to Ullal. It is a small shabby beach and there is not much to do.

I would choose Bekal beach. reason - clean, far from crowds, good surroundings, convienient....
We drove from Bekal to Bangalore via Madikeri after our trip to Kerala north ( Wayanad, Calicut, Mahe ). Though we did not step into the beach at Bekal ( we visited the fort ), the beach looked inviting and attractive. Flip - the beach is too gradient - cannot venture into the waters. Ullal beach is also steep, but narrow and unclean - the only plus point being proximity to Mangalore City. The distances : Bekal to cherkala ( near kasargod )- 16 kms on NH17 Cherkala to Jalsoor ( near sulya ) - 37kms on SH 56 Jalsoor to Sulya - 8 kms SH 88 Sulya to Sampaji - 22 kms SH 88 Sampaji to Madikeri - 22 kms SH 88 Total - 105 kms Madikeri to Ullal - on SH 88 - 134 kms via puttur and vittala. I do not have any details about resorts in and around bekal. Hope this helps... Regards, Rao |

I have stayed in Bekal three days last July 2008 and loved the area. The afternoon/evenings at Pallikere beach in front of the fishers village are really interesting.Kasaragod is not very nice but an interesting market and quite a lot of good restaurants.
From Kasaragod you should visit Ananthapura temple near Kumble few kilom. north of Kasaragod. In Madhur east of Kasaragod you can also pay a visit yo the temple of Shree Madanandeshwara Shiddhivinayak. Accommodation is the most complicate thing in the area as there are very few hotels/guesthouses. In my gallery hre in indiamike you can see some pictures of Pallikere beach as well as Bekal beach/fort Jorge |
