From what I read in a few travel guides, getting beer or alcohol is a bit of a problem in bars or restaurants in Cochin.
Can anyone who has been there comment on the accuracy of this ? Any info would be much appreciated. Cheers. Philip |

Most of the bigger Hotels(except Abad Hotels) have Beers. Grand Hotel on MG Road(Ernakulam) has a Bar. Can Guarantee you wont Find any Four X though. I did manage to put away a few Fosters in Bangalore last year during the Cricket.Fosters didn't seem to go so Flat as quickly as per the Kingfisher. Cheers vandy ![]() |

The street side cafes in Fort Kochi sell beer on the side in tea pots, and they call it special tea.
There are two - three legal bars just around the corner where there is no hypocrisy involved. |

Seagull was my favourite. From the northern tip of Fort Kochi take to southeast, follow the coastline. The place is not far away,, near the jetty to Ernakulam. The restaurant had different restauraunts to westerns and Indians, we had a lot of joy to visit both of them. The Indian side was loudy!

I think you are the first Aussie I have heard of who will admit to that. I spent two years working in a bottleshop while going back to university, and never once sold a single bottle of the stuff.

Two things, as in most areas, there will be "dry" days (festivals, election days, and such; sometimes one fixed day a week even, not sure about Kerala). Another thing is both Kochi and Ernakulam seem to pretty much close up at say 9-11 PM. Even some "night clubs" I was taken to don't go past 1 AM if even that I don't think (maybe 3 on weekends or so?) Moreover, transport between the two becomes problematic somewhere later in the evening (say 9 PM or so), when buses and ferries stop running and you're left to rather pricey taxis that arguably have to take quite a detour, and may be hard to flag down just like that even.

its not a problem if you are staying in fort kochi area to get beer, but never expect the quality of european beer from the indian beers. in kerala its not common to serve beers in family restaurants. but when you go for a more luxurious ones beer will also be served. As I said earlier. if you are staying in fort kochi area, it doesn't matter really as you will get beer everywhere.
