beach or kerala backwaters

i fractured my ankle during my travels and now am headed to India to recuperate with family for 6 weeks. I would like to get away for a week or two- either to a beach or kerala backwaters - some place that is NOT a luxury resort, but comfortable and easy to get to from Bangalore.
any suggestions?

Bangalore to Cochin by train and head for Cherai beach which is
on Vypeen Island, you can take ferry to Vypeen from Ernakulam.

Backwaters can be reached either by Car and/or Train to Allepey.

My reccommendation is Kannur. Its a 5 hour taxi ride from bangalore (I dont know about trains).

There is a wonderful place to stay called Kannur Beach House ... its in the hotel forum (listed as Beach House Kannur). If ever there is an ideal place to recuperate -- this is it. Very relaxing place, fantastic hosts who speak perfect english, wonderful food, beautiful beach, and your very own section of backwater and private canoe.
