Beach hut accommodation in Kerala?

Hi Folks,

Is it possible to stay on the beach in Kerala? Would quite like to find somewhere like Palolem with beach huts? Is this an option anywhere at Varkala or Kovalam?

at varkala proper, most of the accommodation is up on a cliff behind the restaurants and shops or up the road away from the beach but if you walk along the path at the clifftop, heading north, you will find some nice accommodation but none is right on the beach, the path goes along there. it is more on a level with the beach though and there is greenery around and fewer people, when i was there in february 06. the main beach area and the clifftops have the best restaurants though. seafood meals and a small restaurant had home baked breads and western style cakes, southern end of beach. you can even get a pretty good leg wax there at a stall just near the beach.
about 8 ks north there is a small town and there are a couple of shacks right on the beach but i would want to be with company and keep an eye on my gear, but then i didn't meet the owners and they may look after the shacks. worth a look though. there is a river as well and it is a very pretty area.
