backwaters
I want to do a houseboat through the backwaters but I'm not sure where to do it from. This will me in mid-January. I have heard that it gets boring if it's done for more than 24 hours so I'm looking for something less than that and hoping to do something that I can do overnight as well. What is recommended in terms of whether it should be done during the day or night and where to start from and where to end and how long it should be done?
Thanks in advance!

Hi there,
Most travellers usually do an O'night Houseboat cruise,
The houseboats Normally depart around mid morning to midday and
Return the following day by 10am.
I have heard of people just hiring the houseboat for a daytime
Journey for approx 6hrs which includes lunch.
Don't forget the Country Boat cruises, in my opinion better value and you get to see a lot more in the smaller canals.
Allepey is the best place for both of these. If you get down to the main Jetty by 8-9am you should have enough time to inspect
some Houseboats and workout a price.

Thanks for your reply vandy!
Question, do I return back to Allepey or somewhere else? What do most people do - return back there or go to Kochi or Kollam?
Thanks again!

Some people arrange to be dropped at Kumarakom which is on the other side of Verband Lake.If you start your houseboat journey in Allepey they return to same place where you started.
There is a Backwater Ferry from Allepey to Kolam which takes
Most of the day to reach Kolam, have heard its pretty good.
Departs Allepey approx 10am reaches Kolam approx 4-5pm, cost is
approx 400rps per person.
I still get conflicting reports that Houseboats do not ply the
Allepey to Kollam route anymore, yet i have seen somewhere that
travellers have used a Houseboat from Kollam to Allepey.

Allapey is the place to get houseboats..there you can enjoy the backwaters as well..
