April/May: Crowded In Kerala?

I recently read a post on one the many travel forums I've recently perused that said Kerala is quite crowded during late April and May. The poster advised to book rooms in advance -- a practice I like to avoid.

I have read nothing else to support that statement.

As this has been the most informative forum I've encountered, I'm wondering if any one could provide some additional information about crowds in Kerala during that time.

Thanks, in advance, for any insight you might provide.

The only thing I can say is that we're going in early May and contacted the places we want to stay asking how far in advance we'd need to book, since we can't guarantee we'll be going at all until 2 weeks before, and they all said "May is a quiet month, just turn up and there will still be rooms available, if you need to".

Hi there, you shouldn't have any problems whatsoever for Accom.

Take note, Month of May is extremely Humid & Hot just before the
Monsoon arrives in June.

Hill Stations May be more Bearable.

Crowds apart (the season wouldn't seem to indicate any, but local holidays may well come into play), for a general overview of the weather, kindly check this whole thread: India climate chart

For Kerala May is considered to be off season as it's quite hot during this time, especially the beaches & backwaters.

Done April in Kerala a few times. Heat increasing, crowds decreasing, a few evening showers. Top kerala hotels are booked up pretty much all year, even during the monsoon, I was told at one hotel, but lower-to mid budget places are winding down, and you may not get all the fun and entertainment. Prices shoudl have come a notch on the tariff, though.

I may well be there in May this year. If you can put off your trip intil next year, I'll tell you what it was like!

It'll be cooler there than here, but that's not saying much

Kerala in April May

HI..
In mid April in Tamil Nadu (neighboring state to west) they say from Mid April that it is Agni Nakshatram - which means fire star in English- the heat becomes unbearable for the next few months. This is equally true for Kerala.
Most people stay inside, there are not alot or any festivals in most parts of Tamil Nadu (even Kerala) during this time. It is a slow time as most people don't go out as much as in cooler times of the year.
IT is true that it is school holidays and college holidays for most also, but not sure if that means it is more busy. South Indians from my experience are more homely people and travelling is done less and especially during the hot months.
We go to Kerala yearly during May June time frame and to show how it is slow- one year we went to Varkala (near to Trivandrum) in November- high time and it was crowded, all the shops were running and foreigners everywhere. But then we went back in May -absolutely no one was there it was dead, even the shops had been fully dismantled, it seemed like a ghost town. No one was on the beach either!!!
Hope this is helpful.
Jennifer
