Hi,
Am new to this site, so not sure where to post this! Am planning to spend a few days in Varkala at Xmas - am currently staying and teaching English in a village in Kottayam district, Kerala. It's a bit remote and have just lost my fellow English teacher/travel partner, so some new company would be much appreciated around Christmas and possibly New Year. |

thorn tree is also setting something up
Hi. I have posted something on thorn tree trying to organize a New Years party in Varkala. People are interested, the only problem is no one seems to know where to stay. Anyone have any suggestions to have a good but smaller(than Goa anyways) in Varkala for New Years? Thanks all!

There are a lot of new hotels just opening on the north cliff that are nice, clean and cheap as well. Just ask around when you get there. So far, the season has been a bit slow, so you can bargain. Pay no more thant 40 rupees from the train or bus station by autorickshaw.

Regards rickshaws, the fare should really be no more than 25 rs in reality. 7.50rs basic + 3rs per km. It's about 3km in all unless you're doing a lot of back streets at the North Cliff. Watch the 'strikes' or 'hartals' where the drivers will want double. Once there, use the bus 2.50 - 3rs. YES, let's arrange a Christmas get together ! Sea View ? Dolphin Bay ? |

bb, you seem to be the authority on Varkala, so I'm sure those of us up for a get together will be more than happy with whichever of those places you suggest.......... keep us posted......

... well I've go to know some of the waiters quite well and both of the places I mentioned are pretty similar beachfront places not far apart..
If I can get an idea of numbers, I can reserve a table... We'll have to create a code name like ' are you here for the Indiamike party ? '... ' then please come this way.. ' The best food is the fresh fish ( sereved evenings only ), so it would want to be Christmas Eve or Christmas Day Eve.. I think Christmas DAY eve may be the best choice.. Beer will be plentifully available, as are 'cocktails'. LARGE portions of freshly chosen fish are 70 - 120 rs depending on size , type etc. I'm back in Varkala tomorrow night .. Takers anyone ![]() |

... looks like Christmas Day Eve ( 25th ) is sounding like the best option.. ?
I'll go ahead and start trying to sort out a nice table etc.. but an idea of numbers would be helpful ! I'm guessing somewhere between 5 and 10 ? More ? I'll keep an eye on this thread for more suggestions / takers.. PS. By the way, I do NOT look like the picture in my avatar - so don't go looking for the stressed looking old guy !! bb |
