I am a bit of a book-geek and love to browse through old books as well have the opportunity of exploring local literature. I am currently reading (second time, first was too long ago) THE GOD OF SMALL THINGS, as well I purchased DAUGHTERS OF KERALA and THE LAST JEWS OF KERALA (I devour books, so I will be done soon with those!). Is there any good bookstore where to purchase contemporary, local literature? If so, where? and any title you would suggest? Also, I love languages and whenever I travel, I see if I could be lucky enough to find old dictionaries (turn of the century Malayalam / English or Spanish or Italian or French would do)and/or old grammars for foreigners. Thank you in advance to anyone kind enough to respond! Cheers, Mad

Fantastic! Thank you, will look for it. I believe there may be some bazaar / antiques-like store that may have some random books - I guess it is all about weeding out the "dubious" ones... exciting nonetheless! Cheers, M

Hey, You can try 'DC Books' and 'Modern Book Center' situated in Thiruvananthapuram at Statue Road and Gandhari Amman Kovil Road respectively. Both have an extensive selection of fiction and non fiction books about India and the Keralan Culture. Cheers!

Fort Cochi has at least 1 good bookshop in the 'tourist hotel area'. I have heard also Ernakaulam, but not sure where. Varkala, Kovalum and Cochi are very good for 'travellers books' ie, what is in vogue that year and previous for us!! Many are photocopied- so cheap, but check at least the ending is in the book- not blamk pages. Hope this is of some assistance, Stoot.

idiom booksellers, Kochi I am a avid reader too and easily my fav bookstore found on travels in Kerala is Idiom Bookstore in Kochi. Has all you might need! They have a few stores, but I tend to linger most in the one behind St. Francis Church, Fort Cochin. Its the one that gives you your books in a sack bag with Saraswati printed on them. Enjoy!!!
