Alleppey to Kumarakom

I want to do a houseboat tour out of Alleppey in December. After the 1 day tour I will be heading to Thekkady/Periyar. It seems that the logical thing to do would be to end my cruise in Kumarakom - thus shortening the trip to Thekkady/Periyar.
However, I was told by one operator that "We always recommend Alleppey to Alleppey cruise. It is more enjoyable, will cover more places and villages, more value. Alleppey to Kumarakom cruise is not as enjoyable as Alleppey to Alleppey cruise."
Is there any truth to that? They are also asking me to pay an extra Rs.500 to be dropped off in Kumarakom.
Would I be better off just ending in Alleppey and then taking a ferry across?
Thanks

Is this is just a day cruise to see villages & rice fields? If yes then you can do this at less than 20 bucks. Local government ferries start from alleppey (7.30 a.m) & end at a point (cant recall name). Its 2.30 - 3hrs ride. From that point take a Taxi/Auto/Bus & go to Kumarakom (15-20 Km i guess).Hire a boat in kumarakom at 250-400 bucks for take a 2 hr ride which includes a stop over at an Island & a restaurant right on the edge of the lake for lunch (on request) & then continue the Boat ride.

I have done this in aug 2008
