Allepey to Varkala

Hi there,

Just wondering wot my best way is of getting from Alleppey after my backwaters cruise to Varkala? Is it by bus or by train? Is it reliable and efficient enough? How long is it likely to take me?

Kind Regards

Maz

By train it's about 3 hours (if I remember well with a lot of stops) .

Ciao.

.. Yep, 2-3 hrs by train. Regular service(s) but the 'expresses' from Cochin-Trivandrum are a better better than a long hauler coming from say Mumbai.. Less potential delays etc..

However the bus is always a regular option and actually takes around the same time !

.. But also check the train times as you'll be arriving relatively late into Allepey, and you'll be a little 'tired' after ( I asume ) a 6hr cruise on a ferry.. And I've heard ( I never had to.. ) staying in Allepey is not such an amazing option.. But prove me wrong !

I didn't like Allapuzha very much..... but fortunately I found a nice place to stay in (Tharavad Heritage Resort-600 Rs http://tharavadheritageresort.com/) and when I can sleep well I made my point!

We'll check-out off the boat is actually 10am, so I'll be looking to leave Alleppey around then to head straight for Varkala, woudl you advise train or bus for a more comfortable journey?

I took a brief look and I think you miss the last 'fast' train in the morning which is around 9.30am.. ( 6603 )

The next 'fast' direct is not until MUCH later in the afternoon.. You may be able to find a connection at Quillon ( check the Southern Railways site http://www.southernrailway.org/srail...340&category=1 ) and get to Varkala from there.

On the other hand, there are good express(ish) buses direct from Allepy to Varkala, and you should have a fun ride ! Trains can be a little boring at times

Seems like you are taking the 24 hour houseboat option in Allepey... In such case, you can go for a motor boat option to Varkala. I think it leaves alleppey boat jetty around 11am and reaches Quilon around 6 pm at the bus stand. You should be able to get a bus or train to Varkala easily...

Personally I felt 24 hours plus another 7 hours in the water a lil too much... But just a thought for you to consider...

The train ride from Alleppey through Quilon is one of the most beautiful train rides. To sit at the door of the cabin, legs out, as the wind rushes by, and watch the coconut groves and green paddies unfold is an experience that shouldn't be missed. Umbelievably gorgeous.

In contrast, going by road one gets drowned in noise, traffic, pollution, etc. Not that there's nothing to see when you travel by road, but that's the contrast.

Take the train and take your time!
