Question accommodation in thrissur for puram

Does anybody know the exact dates of the pooram festival in thrissur/kerala this year?
And also, can anyone recommend a nice, but cheap hotel/hostel there?
thanks!

There are two famous pooram festivals in Thrissur. They are the Thrissur Pooram festival and the Arattupooza pooram (11 Km away from Thrissur).
I am not sure about the Thrissur pooram festival dates but the arattupooza pooram festival is slated to be on the 31st of March this year.

There is a "Events of the Month" section in the website of Kerala Tourism which details the dates (www.keralatourism.org/).

Bye

Just a small warning: to me, Pooram looks like a very crowded, noisy and male-dominated gathering; as a woman, I wouldn't go there unless I am familiar with it, I'm in a group and I'm guided by a local whom I trust. If you are a first-timer and a woman, I don't think that you can get too close and feel safe at the same time. I saw (on TV) groups of foreigners watching the proceedings from elevated wooden platforms, not mingling with the crowd.

Trichur Pooram is on 27th April.

Some hotels are
Hotel Sidhartha: +91 487 2424773
Casino Hotel: +91 487 2424699
Hotel Elite International: +91 487 2421033.

The big crowd where a stranger could feel unsafe is after 04.00 PM during the main event at south side of the temple. There is lot to see before.

I would doubt if you can get lodgning on the main day of Pooram. Bookings are taken months in advance and even based on influence/frequent customers and so on.... You can stay in one of the nearby towns and take the train/bus into the city early in the morning.

Peak crowd can be quite painful as icetea rightly put it, BUT there is a specific foreign tourists watching area that you need to locate well before the 4pm start and be one of the early birds in there.

However during the earlier part of the day, you can find a lot of women all around the temple and no harm exploring by yourself during the day at all.

Pooram is a festival for all senses, I would encourage you to experience it by yourself. You can see some pictures in my signature link 2.

Pooram

I'm told Pooram will be held from the 21st to the 27th of April this year. I believe the main event is on the last day, but I also believe there will be elephants and other things of interest all week long - it is quite a large festival with many different events. Accomodation in Thrissur will likely be difficult to find. You might try staying in a nearby town and bussing into Thrissur - towns like Irinjalakuda & Guruvayoor & Kodungalloor are a little quieter than Thrissur, and have busses running into Thrissur every 20 minutes or more. They are 30 minutes, 1 hour, and 1.25 hours away, respectively. They also have their own charms...
Also, the YMCA is building a new hotel in Thrissur, but I haven't seen if it is open yet - looks like it might be a good option.

Rooms are still available in hotels for Trichur pooram.

By 3 O clock, you have to choose whether to go back to your hotel room or to get the toutist seats. Catching the seats earlier would make you lose the sprit of Pooram.

Not true. There would be a sample fireworks two days ago and elephant's ornaments exhibition on the previous day.

pooram

thanks for all your very helpful advise! We'll stay outside of trichur now, in a small place called chalakudy and will be taking the train to trichur for the festival.

This tourist area, does anyone know where it is located?

And, has anyone actually been at the festival? How is it?

Nicola, I really hope that you like crowds of excited men, and constant loud drums.. I haven't been there yet (and don't wish to!), but we watch it on TV every year. The elephants are nice, of course.
