Accommodation for 6 weeks in Ernakulam

Hi,

I am a medical student and will be doing my medical elective at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in Ernakulam. I have the choice of staying in the accommodation on the campus (for a fee), however have been told by a number of people that its not great and there are very strict rules as it is a religious organisation (no mobile phones etc). I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on alternatives...hostels or cheap guesthouses reasonably nearby which I could stay at for the 6 week period. Or should I just go with the convenience (and probably greater safety) of the campus accommodation?
