Can I get by on $750 OK per month in Kerala for accomodation/utils/food OK ? I don't drink booze anymore.
I am however NOT vegetarion so I need meat every day.

Can anyone suggest a place near the beach with neighbourhoods with old style architecture ? Las time I was on south-west coast was 1994 but I hear Goa prices just spiralled up and up.

I just want to plonk down with a stack of books 6 months and buy a USB dongle to keep connected to the net which is vital.

Can anyone also suggest the best mobile net in Kerala?
I use MAC as well if that is a problem with their software...

Is there any lovely hillstation in Kerala and would getting online with wireless net be a problem.Sometimes I need to watch stocks for a full day.

The problem (only one of them) is that it is quite an expensive state to live in; especially if you buy imported items. However, if you decide to live like a local + some extras, US$750, which is around Rs. 33,000, is more than enough.

Where I am, your budget would be something like this:

House rental (this is possible to do, but a minimum of 6 months is required): Rs. 3000

Food: Rs. 6000

Internet: Rs. 1500

Other items: Rs. 2000

Total: Rs. 12,500, which leaves you a good 20,000 for other things. The Internet connection should be arranged through a local person. Quite a lot of locations have ADSL, but various reasonably high speed USB dongle options are available depending on location.

It depends where you stay, places like Varkala & Kovalam are very expensive these days especially for meat & fish.
Carnivores are allowed to eat veg you know,or are you a meatetarian??????

Ooty & Kodaikanal are both nice hill stations.KK

Hi Electroid

beach : kovalam & varkala crowded, but varkala is ok ,Alleppey too is good & quiet or you could go north of kerala where its untouched by tourist.

hill station: Munnar, vagamon,idukki etc

I was hoping to do it on £100 a week and thought I'd manage well.

xL

I can afford six weeks and have airfare prepaid plus visa
Don't need to rent my flat out (for which I could get £200 a week, but daren't)

you sound rich, can't wait...buy me a drink at the Rock and Roll in Varkala?

$750 is above average income for many. Except IT or management folks, others don't make that kind of money (more so, excluding metros).
As pointed out, the longer your visit is, the cheaper would be your accommodation. Then, you should live like locals. It is not meat that will cost you, but your lifestyle.

At some Rs. 1,100 a day, it's by no means a lot for a foreign visitor.*

Might well be doable; then staying put in places for longer, and for as long, will of course tend to bring costs down. But a lot I really don't think it'll be.

See also this recent thread, India & Bangladesh for 6 months on £3000?

* (btw The poster mentions having last been there in 1994. I first visited there around that time, when I got by on some Rs. 200 a day, as decidedly a budget traveler. Just forget about this today, and so there's really nothing to compare there.)

At around Rs. 1,030/day for you, I guess the other person could buy you a pepsi or two

ps

If you can manage to scrape by there today on some Rs. 185 a day, I guess you're doing pretty well even as a resident local Indian.

Greeeeeeeeeeeat. I just need to stay somewhere cheaper than Bangkok Thailand which is where I'll be passing through. Most important is USB net coverage as I need to watch stocks in Thailand all day some days.
I'm feeling the positive vibes already. This seems like a cool forum as well.

If I hoped from city to city on 1 month rentals I guess my rental costs will double ? Just a simple a/c studio in interesting areas is all I need (not back of beyond.)

The budget stated above is more than enuff. I have been here 8 months and get by on about 500 pounds per month and what do i get well (car, house, maid to clean, food and also eat out when i can) its a nice place as long as one knows what they want.

The trick is to avoid touristy places and act like you are here for good thereafter negotiation becomes easy...and best part is I am not yet able to speak the local lingo!
