Where to stay in Hampi
Hi,
I'm planníng to visit Hampi end of this month. I want to book my accommodation upfront if possible. Can anyone recommend a place or share their experiences? I'm planning for 1 day trip 2 Badami and 2 days for Hampi. Should I stay in virupapur gadde(other side of river) or Hampi bazar? Considering time I have and constraint of 6:30 to return for boat ferry. It would be great if anyone can provide recent info about guest houses there, because it looks like things are changing fast at Hampi. Last thing : please suggest me a place to get nice food as well (if it's not too much to ask for )Thanks in advance! |

I was in Hampi for the first time a few weeks ago and stayed for 3 days.
I doubt you'll need to book a place before arriving and I guess you'll get a better price if you bargain on the spot rather than agreeing a price at a distance. I stayed in two of the many guest houses in Hampi bazaar - there didn't seem to be much to choose between them. While the ruins in Hampi are amazing and well worth the visit, I regretted not crossing the river and staying on the other side because the Hampi bazaar area is very touristy indeed. Nothing unpleasant, but you can't walk around without getting constantly accosted by people with things to sell. If you want a more peaceful time, I suspect you're better off on the other side of the river. For food, there is no shortage of perfectly adequate tourist-oriented places to eat but I found it pretty hard to get decent Indian food in Hampi bazaar. I ended up eating in places which only had signs in Kannadan, with mixed results! The Mango Tree is in a really nice location, but I can't speak for the food. |

boat service is known to be cancelled by police orders whenever the water level rises in the river due to discharge of excess water from tungbhadra dam. i was lucky as the day i was in hampi, boats were working but had been cancelled on the earlier day and were again cancelled next day.

Across the river you'll constantly be accosted by people with hash to sell. It's a bit of a backpackers haven, but I enjoyed it. And you can get a beer if you like. There is great countryside and rural villages beyond. Rent a scooter and explore!
I stayed at Mowgli Guest house. The food was pretty good. Lots of western fare and Israeli dishes as well as the typical North Indian stuff. They make good pizzas. |
