Where for Christmas?

My wife and I arrive in Bangalore on December 17th at about 5 am. We are thinking of a couple of days in Bangalore to get over jet lag and get used to some aspects of India as this is our first visit.

I have work in Chennai from Dec 28th to 30th. So now trying to decide where we should go during intervening ten days and where should we spend Christmas? We thought to go south (ish) first and then to Pondicherry and on to Chennai but no luck so far with accommodation in Pondy (emailed twelve places so far and two were fully booked and others not replied) so maybe that kind of itinerary is not feasible?

We like wildlife, some sightseeing - but not too much. Also music, theatre and interesting food. Have had a good look at the forums on IM but am totally overwhelmed at the moment with all the possibilities. Also some posts point out this may not be best season for high altitude places (hill stations) or for some wildlife reserves.

So any ideas for suggested itineraries, hotels/home stays, restaurants, 'must see' sights, bird/wildlife centres. And also best way of travelling around? Budget of maybe $75 per day with occassional 'treats' e.g. staying in a more expensive hotel or hiring a car and driver instead of travelling more cheaply.

Just replying to myself in case anybody reads the thread

Well we now have accommodation in what looks like a lovely guesthouse in Pondicherry and will be spending three days there over Christmas.

We are now trying to organise an intinerary from Bengaluru to Hampi and then to Mysore and district between December 17th and 24th when we are arriving in Pondi. I have another thread about this and have had some useful replies but if anybody wants to add anything...
