even though it is easier to drive around yourself, it is better to get a driver because he will come in handy if the car breaks down and you are in the middle of nowhere. Also, I doubt you will get a self drive car unless you borrow a friend's car.

Places to visit in Coorg considering you will be there for around a week:

1. Bailakupe / Kushalnagar - (on the way to coorg)Buddhist Monastry / settlement, very beautiful
2. Nisaradama - (on the way to coorg)Forest area with river running through it. quieter on weekdays. can stay in forest guesthouse.
3. Iruppu waterfall - quite a drive and a little trekking
4. Dubare Elephant Camp - Can stay or visit, pass Harangi dam en route.
5. Madikeri - is the main town of Coorg
6. Try staying in a coffee estate to get the full Coorg lifestyle experience
7. Tala Cauvery - further down Madikeri, starting point of the river Cauvery
8. Nagerhole - You could try returning by a different route than the one you took while coming. Nagarhole national forest is just on the other side via Kutta. Can stay in forest guest house.

These places, I have been to.
Ones I haven't been to, you can find out more on the net or here with some other IM member:
Thadiyandamol - I think you have to trek to it from Kakkabe Village at the base. Hike of around 8 km one way

Look at a good Karnataka road map to chalk out your itenerary.

Writing all of this makes me feel like going there again.
Coorg is a beautiful place with beautiful and proud people. I hope you enjoy your stay. Don't miss pigging out on the traditional pork dishes.

You will get cabs from Mysore or Bangalore ..for wild life, go to Dubare and Nagarhole . A Tibetan settlement called Bylakuppe is beautiful and its near Kushalnagar ..Irupu is awesome as well.. I would personally recommend these as Natasha has covered several others .Suggest taking a cab from club mahindra as the roads are quite confusing unless you know the area well

have a great trip

I doubt if anyone will be willing to rent the car for your use. but instead you can hire a car with a driver or try using bus or train service. The package tours are good . If you want to stay for a long time you can take a bus ride.

Self driven cars from agencies like Hertz do not come cheap. Better to hire a cab.

self driving is fun and exciting but at the same time it's a bit of risky and stedious too.. In case if u hav a driver, then you can sit back and enjoy the ride and the risk of missing some places or taking the wrong route can be avoided..Just an opinion..

Anyways have fun.. happy journey

ok, firefox, are there any small trecks for a day ? i also love bird watching is there any possibility to have a days trip for that? we will be omiting elephant camp as we have seen in northern states and we love to see animals move in natural surroundings.do u think 7 days r too much for coorg or will it be ok to enjoy the nature?
I know i am asking too many questions and sorry for that.
