We're leaving for India in less than a week and are very excited!
Our trip includes a short stay in Udupi and we are really looking forward to it. I've tried to do good research here on India Mike and in the standard guidebooks, but thought I'd check in to see if we're missing anything. We'll be staying in the Udupi Residency which appears to be in the 'thick' of it near Temple Square. We're planning of course to visit the Krishna Mutt and other temples plus sample the tasty Udupi cuisine. I've read about Woodlands, Amanthrana, Hotel Mitra Samaj and Hotel Diana for Udupi cuisine. Plus we're planning to shop a bit on Car Street and if we have time visit St Mary's and the beach - anything else we should definitely do? Thanks All- Sky & Patty

This is the best time to visit Udupi.
It rains like cats and dogs here during rainy season and very hot and humid during summers. Are you planning to go to Sringeri aswell ? Cheers! |

Hi Manzy,
Good to hear we picked good timing - We want to be nice and comfortable- not drenched and cranky - to try lots of tasty Udupi cuisine! I was just looking at pictures of Vidyashankara Temple - it looks marvelous. I wish we would have time, but I fear too much India and too little time on our trip. We're taking the train from Goa and spending evening, night and most of the next day in Udupi before catching the train again and heading to Kannur - so I doubt we'll make it to Sringeri this trip.Cheers - can't wait to see Udupi- Patty & Sky |

Hi Zuzu: What did you think of the Udupi Residency Hotel? I will be going with my wife and daughter (12 yrs) and would like to find something comfortable but not very fancy. AC and centrally located are good.
Also, anyone...I will arrive by train from Kerala. I think we'd like to hire a car to take us to Belur/Halebid. Any suggestions about agency and route? Thanks! |

Route for Belur / Halebidu is from Udupi to Hebri ==> Augumbe ==> Jaipura ==> Balehonnur ==> Aldur ==> Chikamangular ==> Belur ==> Halebidu ==> Hassan. By the way you will just two kms away from Sringeri temple on this route. You may visit the temple also if you are intrested. Cheers! |

Hi India Magic - Udupi Residency was fine. It was quite comfortable and a very large hotel. My impression was that it is a business focused Indian hotel. They do have a restaurant as well and it is well located to visit Temple Square. I wouldn't necessarily call it fancy, but I didn't sense that there were any really fancy places in Udupi - it may perhaps be the newest/largest hotel in Udupi though. I like to reserve in advance and honestly picked Udupi Res as they had a website and I could pre-reserve. I was actually glad we did - when we arrived the front desk seemed about to turn us away - basically didn't want us to release the tuktuk until we'd confirmed we had a room. It was a little weird - I didn't sense the hotel was full while we were there and the staff was quite friendly. I think you will be comfortable there.
Cheers! |

If you are travelling by public transport (buses), an option could be to go to Hassan/Chikmagalur from Udupi/Mangalore(not sure of the bus connectivity) & go around Belur/Halebid - would be atmost a 1 day affair at Belur/Halebid (depending on our interest levels) - first half of the day (say 10am to 2pm would be enough for most. Once done with Belur/Halebid, you can head to Bangalore (assuming you are coming here). The route from Udupi to Belur/Halebid wd be very scenic & you would enjoy it, except for the bad roads (I hear - after the rains).
