Travel Trip Advice
Hi there,
Me and my partner are travelling to Karnataka for the first time, We would like to visit Bangalore, Coorg, Mysor and KodaiKannal. We will be flying into Chennai to go to Kalahasti Temple before launching on our adventure. I would really appreciate if we could get some advice on how we should plan our travel to maximise our 8-9 days before flying out.We hope to fly from Bangalore or Mangalore, i guess this will be decided depending on how our trip works out. Please advice and Thank you in advance. |

Well, I guess Chennai-Kodaikanal-Coorg-Mysore-Bangalore would make for a logical route.
In eight to nine days, pretty rushed I'd say. Not all of them the shortest of distances either. Er, wait, coming from Kodai, maybe it-Mysore-Coorg-back to Bangalore would make the better sense.

Well, I guess then Chennai-Bangalore-Mysore-Coorg (or these two the other way around, doesn't really matter)-then back to Bangalore (assuming you're flying out of there. Or back to Chennai or whatever. I think Bangalore will give you the far better chances on international flights and probably cheaper too than Mangalore btw) would make the better sense. Not a bad decision I'd say, it will give you the better chance to see just this in just over a week.
(Hm, in fact that'd put you into two major cities, albeit vastly different ones, at the start of your trip. Maybe make that Mysore [if feasible from Chennai, I should think so]*-Coorg-Bangalore, for the more even balance. And, conveniently, avoiding hitting Bangalore twice for just the short period. If flying from Mangalore, then Bangalore-Mysore-Coorg-Mangalore would make for the obvious and straightforward sequence. Mysore-Madikeri [see below] is something like three hours I think, then Madikeri-Mangalore would be similar, maybe four or whatever. So this is all quite manageable; Bangalore in turn is not too far from Mysore either.) Highlights and stuff I find too general a question. Try to get a hold of this Indian guidebook, if you can't find it at home you will in Chennai, it's a good series and this title of theirs covers that entire region: http://traveller.outlookindia.com/bookdetail.aspx?id=13. Of course, any of the major guidebooks should be enough to get you started. Or of course, read and search around this site's relevant sections to your heart's content. nb In all of this, people often make the mistake of thinking Coorg is a place; it's a region albeit a small one in south-west Karnataka though, also known by its local name of Kodagu, and with Madikeri (Mercara) as its headquarters. If you can and provided you like forests and jungle, I'd suggest taking some days in this area and taking a jungle trek which is readily arranged and otherwise just taking it easy and enjoying the surroundings some. It's beautiful. Be sure to savor the local cuisine some while you're at it, and etc. Maybe stay in a few different places here even, again, don't overestimate what you can do in limited time though. Better to properly see one place than to rush through three I'd say, and besides by way of "sights" as such this is no area to rush around anyway. Apart from its nature and some favored tourist spots perhaps, there really are none. Let's see, two of my more major posts on it and reflecting on my stay earlier this year are here: Coorg, and here: Why do people laugh at me? * Yep, convenient daily overnight train even and taking just 10.5 hours, somewhat to my surprise. There's a faster if more expensive daily (except Tuesdays) Shatabdi train even, taking just 7 hours. Departs at six in the morning though. See http://erail.in?T=MAS::MYS:. Assuming you plan to train it at all, of course. |
