Srirangapatnam
What do people think of it? I'm thinking of getting off the Bangalore-Mysore Rajahamsa and staying a couple of night (end of December).
If you search the site, there are quite a few posts mentioning this place- usually along with Mysore info.
I prefer staying here to Mysore (of course, usually never stay more than one night in either place!)
Bird sanctuary is wonderful, try to go early morning and hire a boat-. Fewer people then, though I don't know if end December is the best time for birds.
There is the Tipu museum and other Tipu related stuff as well, and the Government tourism hotel is in a nice place.. near the river, quiet but basic.
The private hotels are overpriced and nothing much
If you want busy bazaars and stuff, Mysore is better.

Thanks! Two nights, because the previous day involves 5 hrs bus, 3 hrs flight, Bangalore traffic and then another 3 hrs bus! That's why I fancy a peaceful place with some things to see, but a nice place to laze around a bit. Will go on to Sravanabelogola by bus on the third day.

I have not stayed there (since I stayed in Mysore) but it seems like a nice quiet place to be in for a couple of days at least. If you wish to see the Ranganathittu bird sanctuary try to get there as early as possible to see more birds and less people!!! I was really happy with the boat ride and went twice with the same boatman who was really knowledgeable about all the birds. I guess the birds should be there in December since they would be migrating from the colder climates to southern places like this for the winter months. Tipu's summer palace and the shrine and his family's tombs nearby are worth visiting too.
Cheers,
Aadil.

Not far. You will need to take some transport. I am not sure but buses should be plying.
@Suiko,
There is only 2 Direct Buses from Mysore to Shravanabelagola which runs Via Shrirangapatna ..One Starts around 7.45 am and another around 12:00 pm .. So Depending on the bus is Risky !
And for Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, There is private bus once a hour [ Which will be very very crowded] which runs from Shrirangapatna Via a Bus stop nearer to Ranganathittu BS [ They will drop you at a bus stop and you need to walk for 1.5 kms ] and this is also not advisable with your GF ! . An Auto from Shrirangapatna will cost you 100 Rs for the Round-trip to this Sanctuary even though the distance wise the fare is too much !
Cab is better to cover both the places and you could cover both on a Day and back to Mysore with ease !

Thanks, Velu. For Sravanabelgola, I was thinking we would take a Mysore-Hassan bus in Srirangapatnam and change in a place starting with "Cha..." (sorry!), but maybe the Hassan bus doesn't go via Srirangapatnam?
So leaving Mysore at 7.45, the direct bus would pass through Sriranga at about 8.10-8.15? But you think this bus is likely to be full?

@Suiko,
Mysore-Hassan bus will go thru altogether another route [ In Short Mysore - Hassan Bus will not come to Shrirangapatna at all as far as I know].
To My surprise, Even those buses what I mentioned [ Mysore -Shravanabelagola] are not showing up in Latest KSRTC Timtable !.. And this 07:45 am bus was running even 6 months back !
..
Will try to make an Enquiry with KSRTC Mysore and post the info !

Thanks! I've tried the KSTRC site a couple of sites and haven't had much luck with it! Would like to book that bus if it's at all possible.
I also tried booking Mayura View hotel in Sriranga, but no luck there either!
