15 km from Hampi, Daroji Bear Sanctuary, if you want to see the elusive sloth bear. You'll need your own transport.
120 kms from Hampi, Chitradurga Fort.
If you need specific contacts (Forest Dept in Hampi, and my guide in Chitradurga) PM me.
Have a good trip.

If you dont mind spending 50$ a day its worth trying out one ofthe Jungle Lodge resorts. Get pampered in the middle of a Jungle with just the sound of a river flowing by and the very decent Tents to sleep in ! Try out the Cauvery Fishing camp.
If I remember correctly Jungle Lodges and Resorts charge $100 or more for foriegn nationals.
In any event this is a busy time for resorts and they probably charge a premium.
After all, they are a monopoly.

Try Murdeshwar on the coast, a nice indian holy town, largely built by concrete magnate RK Shetty. features include a 160ft gold painted concrete shiva statue on the beach and a huge variety of imaginative uses of concrete. It is a nicer place than the word "concrete" makes it sound. We've got a short piece on it at

Chitradurga Fort with it's 38 posterior entrances sounds interestin.see http://www.karnatakatourism.org/html...hitradurga.htm
visited murdeshwar last year and agree it's worth seeing. udipi was good and don't miss the trip out to st mary's island - clear seawater for a change. if you go pack a bookand a picnic, take an early boat and stay for half a day or so.

try the ancient ruins of the lost city of the pepper queen
' The best and the most famous Queen Channa Bhairavi Devi of Jain religion ruled the Selva Kingdom a few centuries ago. Her kingdom was known for Forest produce and Spices, especially Pepper all over the world. So she was known as PEPPER QUEEN. Forest produce being the main income, she built her capital in the middle of the forest on an Island, called 'BASADI'. It had over 70 Basadis (Jain Temple),of which you can see only ruins now.
We take you to the Island either by boat or by road and for those who would like to discover the place, we can arrange for camping on the island. The legend says there was Dravarasa well in which if you dip iron, it will turnout to be Gold. Again the story says the focal point of the fish eye which is carried on the Chaturmukha Basadi supposed to show the exact place where Dravarasa well is situated.'

Smt Hampana regretted for not making any efforts to remember another great Jain queen Chennabyradevi. It can be recalled here that Chennabyradevi had ruled over the coastal belt of Karnataka with Gerusoppa as here capital comprising the territories of Honnavar, Haduvalli, Barakooru, Bhatkal and Nagire and was popularly called as Kappu Menasina Rani (the black pepper queen
