As soon as I got the info that the migratory birds have arrived so near to bangalore, I started making plans to visit this place. After many failed plans, I finally got a chance to see the nature in motion !! It was amazing.. this being my first trip to a bird sanctuary, I couldnt believe that i am surrounded by so many birds, and the amount of noise they were producing by chirping. The 45 min. boat ride took me to some other planet. It was like I am a part of some live documentary. I saw loads of gumbills, storks, rockbirds and lot of other varieties of birds that i dont know the names of.. !! Add to it the sights of crocodiles and bats and the trip is complete.

Here are some of the pics that i was able to get in between the jaw dropping act !!

Location
Ranganathittu is set on a group of islands in the middle of the Cauvery River, about 20 km from Mysore, in south-east Karnataka.
Entry fee: Indians Rs 20 foreigners - Rs 50
Boat-ride tickets: Indians Rs 20, foreigners Rs 50
Unofficial facilities: Private boat Rs 200

Getting there
By Rail: The nearest railhead is at Srirangapatna, 15 km away
By Road: Catch a bus to Srirangapatna from Majestic Bus Stand or do the approximately-3-hour-drive down the well-paved Bangalore-Mysore Road yourself, via Maddur and Mandya. Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is a short 15 km-drive from Srirangapatna. Cross the Cauvery Bridge under the smiling poster of Satya Sai Baba, and you'll come to a T-junction. The broad left goes to Mysore, the thinner right turn takes you all the way to Ranganathittu.
By Air: The nearest airport is at Bangalore, 134 km away

BTW, if you are going thru road from Bangalore, then dont forget to get some "maddur vade" from the "maddur tiffany" when you enter maddur on the highway :-) ... cheers !!

Phantom, beautiful pics.

When we went there, we landed up by mistake before the sanctuary had opened early morning, and paid a boatman a little extra to take us around anyway. There was just one more guy who seemed to be a professional photographer there.

Amazing. No crowd either. It was one of the highlights of our entire trip.

Sorry can't remember the timings. Say 7.30am ish? We had stayed overnight in Srirangapatna, and went there soon after waking up.

My sense is that they open around 9 or 10. This was three years ago, however.

Phantom timings 10am to 5.30pm , sundays closed
according to http://www.indianwildlifeclub.com/mainsite/bs1.asp

btw, the best place to stay are the state tourist cottages (KSTDC) at Srirangaptna on the banks of the river.. around 500 a day and a very peaceful location. Busy on weekends.. on our return trip to Hyderabad from Kotagiri these were full and we ended up paying three times this at an artificial looking private 'resort' in a less serene location.

edit: cross posted with phantom.
if your friend has been there recently then of course he is right, but the sanctuary was certainly not open at 0730 a few years ago.

Oh you should Nick, you should! Coorg, which is nearby i.e. around 140KM from Mysore is also a very beautiful place to visit. Anyway the entire Western Ghats is a beautiful place, especially for trekking.

Ah.. did I hear trekking.. now Prashant.. I wonder how old you think, Nick is.. ...
Anyways, my friend actually asked the boatman about the timings, as some of the birds can be seen only in the early morning hours. So I am hoping that by 7:30 it should open.
