Mysore to Chitradurga

Hello folks!

While I have my eyes set on Mangalore, I am also thinking of doing a day trip to Chitradurga from Mysore. A site suggests the following route:

Mysore-Mandya-Maddur-Huliyurdurga-Kunigal-Tumkur-Sira-Chitradurga

Can this be a day trip? What would be the pitfalls?

I will be going in my car with my family.

AM

It would be approximately 200+kms (my first guess) oneway if you are attempting this road trip & would take atleast 4-5 hours of driving in each direction. I am assuming the route through Mandya & Nagamangala instead of Maddur.

So, I would suggest you not to consider this for a day trip (assuming you want to return back the same day). But the road condition is pretty good & you should be able to do it, if you have some specific compulsion to visit & just have 1 day at hand.

Chitradurga - Bangalore( byepass ) - mysore : 332 kms

Chitradurga - Bhadravati - Chikmagalur - Hassan - Mysore : 350 kms.

In addition to being shorter, Bangalore route is much more convienient, could byepass small towns and has excellent roads. You could avoid Bangalore city by driving on NICE road ( Tumkur road to Mysore road )

Maddur-Huliyurdurga-Kunigal-Tumkur road is not good after the recent rains

Attached is the route from Mysore to Chitradurga (courtesy MapsofIndia.com) - 251 kms

Hope this gives you a good view of the route to take. The roads were in pretty good condition about an year back. I would assume it would continue to be so even now as the quality of the roads appeared pretty good then

I dont think you would have any significant places to visit along the way (other than the places around mysore). Couple of them could be Yediyur & Adichunchanagiri (places of worship/mutts) & Melukote if you are keen. There is a VanivilasaSagar Dam near Hiriyur, but I am not sure if they allow tourists now. I havent been there for ages now.

Staying options: Would suggest you to stay in Chitradurga itself.

Hope this helps

Please don't take this route. The roads are quite bad now. The best route would be Mysore - NICE road junction (just before Kengeri near Bangalore) - NICE road till Tumkur road - Tumkur - Chitradurga. Total drive should be about 6-7 hours depending on your speed. A single day trip will be quite hectic although doable.

Trip summary report

I did do the trip last week and it was fabulous. The fort is a hidden gem and so are the caves next doors. One suggestion - carry a torch along.

I took SH19 for onwards trip and NH4 for the return. I guess good/bad are relative terms.

SH19 is an undivided road, mostly free of potholes but dotted with nasty speed bumps that come unannounced so speed has to be kept in check. It took me 5 hrs to cover about 260 kms.

NH4 is obviously much faster being a multiple lane highway but then distance from Chitradurga to Mysore comes to about 320 km and then you have the stretch near Bangalore where traffic comes to a standstill. Net-net it still took me about 5 hrs.
