Mysore

What is Mysore like. Does anyone know the best sights to see in just one day and 2 nights. Is the Green Hotel and good place to stay? Or does anyone know anything better. Thanks. Jackie

The Green Hotel is fantastic, but keep in mind that only a few rooms in the main building have that famed splendour. The rest of the rooms are rather ordinary, but the whole place is just good to "be".

You should try to be in Mysore for the sunday night spectacle of the lit palace and the crowds in the streets - the whole city feels like a party. Then of course there is a visit to the palace in daytime and the fantastic produce market. With Chamundi Hill and a daytrip to Somnathpur I find it well worth 3 days or so.

Great, as it happens we will be in Mysore on Saturday and Sunday so we WILL see the lights. I waas undecided whether to detour from kozhikode on our way down to Kerala, Kochi, Trivandrum etc. It cuts our days down there by two but I thought maybe it would be worth it as it looks good in the brochures. Thanks everyone. This site is great. I only put this in a few minutes ago. Jackie

Welcome to IM.

I love Mysore and would second Baba's comments about what to see. I could happily spend hours just wandering the produc market. The palace is very impressive, but gets very crowded, so I'd recommend going as early in the day as poss and avoiding weekends.

We stayed in a suite at the Green Hotel last year. The hotel is a bit out of town, so you need to take an auto to go in, but still on a busy & noisy road. Personally, I would be happy to stay again but would probably stay in an ordinary room - the suites were not worth the extra, since you can wander around the main house regardless of which room you are staying in.

Mysore is one of my favourite places in India too. It's small enough to feel at home, large enough have plenty to explore.

The town specialises in three things:
Incence making, vegetarian thalis and silk selling.

There is a lot of mild pressure to go and see (ie buy) insence sticks being made. And if this is something you like, then you are in for a treat, as the good quality insence sticks are outstanding.

Lots of silk shops around, with some of the best quality and prices in India.

The main market is full of atmosphere and colour and well worth a visit. (search for it on youtube for a preview). There is also an old British trading quarter with lots of small shops that is great for a wander.

The palace is impressive and takes a morning to go round.

There is a nearby hill and temple area, which has fantastic views, and a good atmosphere. Get a taxi up, and walk back down if you are inclined.

If you like vegetarian food, then Mysore has to be one of the best towns in the whole of India for this. High quality and very cheap.

The local area has some fantastic places to visit. Best of all is Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, which is stunning. There is also a little visited Jain statue / temple which is very peaceful, and a much more visited Hindu temple, which is also stunning. These three areas can easily be done in a day with a taxi.

Therefore, if you have time and money, take three days and get to know Mysore and area. Its all good.

Thanks for all the super info. The silk and incense sounds great. Last year I had to buy an extra suit case to fit all my 'buys' in!!
Unfortunately we have only a month in India this year and have a lots to do and see list. We can only stay 2 nights and one day. Hopefully if we leave early enough in the morning we will have an extra half to look around the markets. I was thinking of avoiding Mysore but you ahve all persuaded me it is worth. Thanks, great info. JACKIE

Places to visit in Mysore :-

1) Mysore Palace
2) Chamundi hills (temple)
3) Zoo
4) Philomena's Church
5) KRS / Brivandan garden

Near by places
==============

1) Sringapatnam where you can Tippu's summer palace and a temple nearby
2) Rangana thittu bird sancutary
3) Balmurry falls

all are within 25 kms from Mysore.

There are couple of other palces in Mysore, but I don't remember now...

If you are in Bangalore, the best way to see Mysore would be to take KSTDC bus (Karnataka state tourism corp). They charge less than 1000 per person and they cover all the palces in mysore and srirangapatnam. It starts at around 07:00 from Bangalore and comes back to Bangalore at around midnight. They provide breakfast / meals / dinner and the buses are good volvo a/c buses.

Cheers!

If you are a foodie and like Indian food,
try Mylari cafe and try the masala dosa idly there....its very famous. Although, the hotel is very small and old, the taste is just too good...
Everyone in mysore knows about this place.....mmmmm
Cheers!
