Mysore Palace, Railway museum : hours, admission, guide
I am looking for specific current information on two places in Mysore;
1. The Mysore Palace 2. The Railway Museum A. What are the hours of operation? B. What days are these closed? C. If Admission requires purchase of tickets/passes, can they be purchased in Bangalore? Where? D. Are there good docents who can be hired to guide through the Palace? |

You should try to be in Mysore on Sunday.
Between 7 and 8 pm the palace is illuminated, it is really fantastic. You can then just walk around the palace and there is no admission fee. |

Visting Palace on Saturday / Sunday:-
Pros :- The Palace will be illuminated for a hour as specified by Vonkla and it's very nice to View Cons :- In Saturday / Sunday , Mysore will be overly flooded with Tourists [ Especially bus loads of School / College Students ] and it will be too crowded. Weekdays is best if you want to experience palace as such [And this crowd concept is applicable to all important tourist places in mysore especially KRS / Brindavan Gardens, Mysore Zoo, Chamundi Hills & Palace] Visiting Rail Museum :- It's good with a Guide around [Railway men] who will explain all the older engines kept in this campus . Highlight of this Museum is that ,In a Separate Enclosure they are preserving the Original Salon used by Mysore Maharaja and that's really nice ! In Addition to that, Telephone from older times , Very old Rail Signals and Few photos of Oldest Bridge etc were also Displayed. Maintenance is Average [Especially for the Toy train which is not operated now] [But it's understandable as this Rail Museum Attracts very very less tourists even though it's just 1 km from Mysore Jn]. Entrance Fee is 5 Rs and the Railway man there who double up as guide [Free service] is really enthusiastic and will try to explain to the core if we show minutest of interest and it's informative and interesting at the least !! And on MONDAYS , this will be CLOSED ! Hope this helps Velu Last edited by pmvelu : Jul 15th, 2009 at 22:41. |

velu,
Thanks for the information on the Museum. That's a pity that its not often visited. Will make it a point to ask one of the railway men to show us around. Regards the Palace, i have conflicting information from an acquaintance in Bangalore. He indicated the palace is open from 10am to 4 pm. Your post provided timings of "6 am to 9 am and from 3.30 PM to 6.30 PM every day". Can you clarify? Also, are there different parts of the palace that are open at different times? |

I attributed rajered's post to you. Apologies. Palace timings of 1000-1700 sounds more reasonable. Thanks. |

For Furture Visitors to this thread :- :-
This "Rail Museum" is 100 Metres away from Mysore Railway station provided, you take the Other "Exit" [ Official exit will be 1 km from this museum] and you can ask somebody "Route to KRS Road" and if you follow that route this museum is just 100 metres and that's shortest!! Just thought this info might help somebody !! Regards Velu |
