Question Mysore accommodation help!

myself, wife and son (aged 5) are arriving in Mysore (direct from Bangalore aport) in early April, we're India savy (couple of previous holidays). it seems that most accomodation in Mysore is in faceless hotels could anyone recommend homestays or interesting accomodation (Greeen Hotel gets mixed reviews for its price), we're looking at budget to mid range. Also recommendations for homestays in Coorg appreciated. many thanks

I always stay at the Dasaprakash, in Mysore, near the central square. It's a rambling, old-fashioned place, but airy, and basic, and cheap (!), and I like it. It's also fairly quiet, and with an enclosed courtyard may be safer for the kids. No zooming traffic. Might be a place to get situated and ponder your next move.

Ask for an upstairs room, if possible. Some of the ground floor rooms, especially in the back corner, are liable to flood if it rains. Found that out, one night, by personal experience. Plus, the upstairs rooms are a little more secure with respect to personal belongings.

Dasaprakash Paradise

Hi,

Have you tried the Dasaprakash Paradise in Yadavgiri?

It is a beautiful hotel, great food and in a quiet residential area (that many tourists never get to see. It is also close to VV Mohalla - a great atmosphere and great restaurants.

There's a lot more to Mysore than the city centre!

Well I don't know what your idea of a faceless hotel is but I loved staying at the Hotel Metropole; a charming hotel with huge rooms, a garden, a great restaurant and in a quiet(ish) area. Mind you, this was in 1996.

Mysore has changed less than most places in South India, since it's not really an industrial or high-tech city. Thank God.

The city center is a bit hectic. The north side of the square is a little nicer than the south side. The outlying neighborhoods, though, are (as stated) rather pleasant.

The's really good to hear, it was one of my favourite towns. I loved the market, people were so friendly and the shops were just wonderful.

We bought back a coffee table, 80cm x 45cm, from there - carried the table legs in my hand luggage! - and it's as beautiful now as it was when we picked it up, from the factory. I guess we were quite trusting when the shopkeeper took us in a tuktuk to his factory in the back of beyond to show us his collection. But what a wonderful experience it turned out to be.

Well, the old spice and vegetable bazaar is still thriving. I took some nice pics there a couple of years ago. And the Maharajah's palace is still lit up at night, with the band playing. The priests in the Hindu temples are welcoming to foreigners, too, and will give you darshan, with smiles all around.

I must say, I like Mysore, too.

I've stayed in various hotels in Mysore and find the Dasaprakash is the best choice .It's a bit old fashioned and has a range of rooms.
There's also an excellent veg. restaurant and a (safe!!) ice cream parlour.
Also a travel agent if you want to rent a car to go to Sravanabelagola independently rather than the tour bus.

There's also another hotel of the group mentioned by sweetmango (above) which I've never visited.

Second Dominoes post,

That's what I like about Dasaprakash - it's the India that hasn't been technified. A quieter, simpler, slower India.
