I think the direct trains get there in the middle of the night, The Netravati calls there as does one other train from Mumbai (or Panvel).

The Jan Shatabdi (From Dadar) gets to Madgaon about an hour before the Konkan Railway 'Madgaon-Mangalore passenger' train, this train then gets to Murudeshwar at about 17:00.

Murudeshwar station is about 2 kms from the hotels/beach, but the auto's will only charge you Rs20 for the fare, and there's no catch.

A shave will cost Rs7 and a green coconut the same, it's a great place, the statues are awesome, both during the day and when lit up at night.

(sorry, I just loved this place)

BTW, Murudeshwar is in Karnataka, so I've moved this thread to the correct forum.

Another possibility is train 6311 Bikaner-Trivandrum Express.
This departs Panvel at 2235 hrs WED ONLY. arrives Murdeshwar 10.20 hrs next morning.

Good find.

The other trains that run on those times call at other stations on different days of the week, one maybe calls at bhatkal, another maybe at Honavar, with those times, these trains would also be a good option, especially the Bhatkal train, it's only 20 Kms from Murudeshwar.

These trains (Gujarat - west coast) get booked up quick though.

I just checked.

Train 6337 departs Panvel (Monday and Saturday) at 22:35 and gets to Bhatkal at 10:53 (2A, 3A, SL.) (it also calls at Bhiwandi Road at 21:06, but you'd have to ask someone from Mumbai about that station)

I remember Panvel used to be Mumbai's backwater. How things change! Now trains actually stop there. Bhiwandi Road if I am thinking correctly, must be near kalyan. So Panvel is closer to Mumbai

The statues will interest a 5 year old, look through my photos to find some pictures.

I'm not normally a person who goes for statues, but I found them amazing, the Shiva statue (biggest in India) was mesmerising at night, far better than any photo could show.

Panvel is a very big station now, I'd guess it has 6 - 8 platforms, In November they were building a big roof over the platforms (at least the part of the platform we called at.

Panvel also seems like a terminating station for some of Mumbai's suberban trains.
