Mangalore - worth visiting?

Hi, has anyone have been to Mangalore? Any particular good reason to stop there or to visit the surronds on my way to Kannur (Kerala)?

There is A Nice Krishna temple in Udupi, which is about 55 kms from Mangalore. There are few beaches(Malpe) which are nice.

I stopped there for 24 hours going the other way and it seemed quite an ok place. At 06.30am (!) we found The Hindustan hotel on KS Rao Road - decent and half the price of anything else in that area. The Lalith restaurant on Balmatta Road served us the best meal we had in our whole six week trip (and that's saying something), further up the hill from there is a modern mini-mall with an ice-cream parlour to die for. All in all a comfortable place for a rail stop-off. Johnny.

you have a couple of nice beaches as well, which only the locals go to ... one is tanirbhavi, another is the suratkal beach. but beware of the currents there if you plan to swim.
you could also visit the ~ 1000 year old mangala-devi temple

really random one this- I was on the Koncan Express and I had to chill out in manglalore for 2 hours. I had a lovely meal there and then went to a bar. It was really westernised bar really -flash cant remember the name of it - Anyone else been there?
