Mangalore Airport to Coorg

Hi Yogmania,

Good to see you feedback after you Coorg trip.

I have also booked 6 days at the club mahindra resort in the last week of August. I am travelling from Mumbai to Mangalore by flight. I am with my wife and a year old kid.

Can somebody please help how I should reach coorg from the Mangalore Airport? The resort taxi would cost me Rs. 2300 till from the airport to the resort. Is it worth it?

Help is highly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi... Coorg from Mangalore is about 160 Kms.. However the airport is about 25-30 Kms from Mangalore city.

Rs 2300 is slightly on the upperside. However you do not have many options to travel from the airport except for taxis. Try brining it down to Rs 2000.

One thing i can assure is that, the road to coorg from Mangalore is really scenic and you will definitely enjoy the ride. Let me know if you need more information.

Hi Paddy01Mangalore,
Thank you very much for the reply. This thread is really a wonderful thread and I got all the bits of information that I required. First I thank you all for making this thread very much informative and interesting to read. I was also looking for the similar information but a little different.
I am also traveling to Coorg from Mumbai via Mangalore in last week of August and would be staying at Club Mahindra Resort. (Are you reading this patiltejas? See you there then! )
I would be reaching Mangalore railway station at around 9.30 am. From there I am planning to take a bus to Coorg.
Correct me if i am wrong, it the KSTRC bus stand that I will be going to from the Mangalore Central (MAQ) railway station.
Do I need to make any bus booking before-hand or it is easy to catch any bus to Coorg? How is the frequency of the buses going via to Coorg?

I appreciate your response!
Thanks in advance!

Dear Mithilesh. You can take an auto from Mangalore railway station to the Bus stand (KSRTC). Hardly 15-20 minutes from both the railway stations. To reach Coorg (known as Madikeri in local parlance ) you need to catch a Mysore bus or a Madikeri bus.

It would be good if you can take a Volvo (Again Airavat in KSRTC parlance) from Mangalore (Mangalore - Mysore). Or at the least please take a Rajahamsa bus ( Volvo and Rajahamsa are different classes of service on KSRTC)
Timings:
Volvo:
1st bus to Mysore - 10 AM
2nd Bus to Mysore - 12 AM

Rajahamsa: (Timings that suit you)
10:30 AM
11:00 AM
You can book your tickets through http://ksrtc.in/AWATAROnline/
But unfortunately you donít have an advanced booking option till Madikeri; you will have to book your journey all the way to Mysore. However if your purchasing tickets on the spot you can buy tickets to Madikeri.
Usually buses are not crowded so advanced booking may not be needed. However if you are the types of being an advanced planner and donít want any last minute surprises you can go ahead and book your journey till Mysore. I donít think it would cause a large hole on your pocket. The difference would hardly be about Rs 150. The fares for Mangalore to Mysore for the two classes are approximately:
Rajahamsa: Rs 240
Airavata: Rs 360

Hi guys!
I am planning a trip to Kollur (with wife and kid) on beginning of November and plan to travel onward to Coorg. Please tell me whether there is a direct way from Kollur / Kundapura to Coorg skipping Mangalore. Also tell me whether Mercara/Madikeri is the ideal location or is there any better place to explore Coorg's popular destinations.
Thanks!

Going via Mangalore is fastest and shortest, and has better connectivity (Kollur-Mangalore and Mangalore-Madikeri), if traveling by bus.

The other option is to go via Dharmasthala and Kukke Subramanya, if you are interested in visiting the famous temples over there. This would add another 80kms (and involve changing buses). The drive though is more scenic.

Madikeri is central to most attractions in Coorg. Try staying one of the homestay options (http://www.homestaykodagu.com/) for an authentic Coorg experience.

Thanks,

Trip to Coorg

Hi Guys,

This place is really great, a wealth of information !!

Me and my husband are planing on a 5 or 6 day trip to
Mangalore - Udupi - Kollu (mookambika) and then to Madikeri (coorg), I am starting from Chennai.

I understand from the past thread that there are lots of buses from Mangalore - updupi - kollur, I would like to know how the scene is from Kollur to Madikeri??? Should i take a Taxi and if yes any idea of the cost? How are the roads and are there any comforatable (A/C) buses??

I would also like to know about the places to stay in Madikeri (budget 3000 to 3500 inclusive of food), it would be great if you guys can suggest some places. I am looking at a 2night and 3day stay and I want to cover

1. Abbey falls, 2. Some plantation tour, 3. Irrupu FAlls, 4. Nagarhole Park and Dubare Camp. Is this too much to do?

I also plan to go back to Mysore from Madikeri to catch a train back to Chennai?? Because it is the shortest route, any suggestion on this??

Thanks a ton everyone

You'd still need to go via Mangalore - whether by bus or by car. There aren't too many direct buses. But there are plenty of buses from Kollur to Mangalore (private) and Mangalore to Madikeri (govt). There are infrequent A/c Volvo buses too from Mangalore, pl. look into ksrtc.in for exact timings.

Have traveled only in buses or in my own car and hence not knowledgeable about Taxis and their fares. Roads are decent.

1. Hotel Coorg International is a good option (http://www.coorginternational.com)

2. Rainforest Eco resort (http://www.rainforestours.com/pricing.htm), in the middle of plantation is a good place, but about 16kms from Madikeri town.

3. There are lot of homestay options. (www.homestaykodagu.com)

Could be done. But you'd need a vehicle to roam around. Suggest visiting Iruppu falls and Nagerhole, on the last day enroute Mysore.

Yes. This makes perfect sense. There are two trains. Shatabdi leaving at 2:15PM and Chennai Exp at 8:15PM. Both are poplar trains and would need advance booking.

Thanks,

Hi Ram,

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate this!
And this Rainforest Eco, I hear a lot of mixed reviews about how that place is and about the food conditions there. So am a little confused?? Have you been there personally!

The truth is I really like this place but the reviews in Tripadvisor and other sites are not that great ! Just asking.

Once again, thanks for your suggestion.

Regards

Yes, I've stayed there, about 3.5yrs ago. I can understand the mixed reviews. The food they serve is local/basic (rotis, rasam/sambar, white rice, pulav etc.,)It tasted fine for us and the vegetables are sourced from their own organic farm. I don't know about non-veg food though. On 2nd and 3rd day, we were the only guests and they were happy to cook whatever we wanted. You wouldn't find a 10-page menu to choose from, nor the fancy presentation of the items, typical of star hotels. Its rustic and has its own charm. Go there only if you want to have a different experience (their tents and plantation cottages are bang in the middle of coffee plantation) compared to what you get in standard hotels (BTW, there is a Club Mahindra resort too in Madikeri, a few kms before Rain forest). Anyways, this was the story 3.5yrs ago.

Your itinerary for Coorg is packed. So, you may not be able to spend idle time in hotel just relaxing and going for plantation trails etc., Therefore, it might be a better idea staying in Madikeri itself and avoid the additional 16kms trip each day when you get out to explore Coorg.

All the best. Do however report back after the trip.

Thanks,

Hi
I'm planning a short trip to Coorg (Madikeri) from 5-7 Nov. I have a booking at Club Mahindra. Is there an option of hiring a private vehicle from Mangalore to Coorg? I am travelling with my family (wife, self and young child). I have also heard that some parts of the road on the way are not very good. Is this true? I am planning to leave early morning on 5th Nov.

Appreciate if someone experienced can help me with this information.

I would suggest to take a KSRTC Volvo bus to Coorg and then hire a Local Jeep in coorg. Road condition is bad in Mangalore and entire coastal places. Going by taxi will be very uncomfortable and will take longer time than buses.

If you still want to hire a cab you can book Cell cab 0824 60609090 from Mangalore. Take a Innova or Sumo. There are plenty of taxi's available in Mangalore.
