Great info 2cents, just like to add...

It may be better to use trains that start from Mangalore, trains from further away can be delayed, especially during the monsoon season.

The following train times are for the monsoon season.

Train KR2 departs Mangalore daily at 06:50, Kankanadi at 07:00 and gets to Kundapura at 08:54.

Train 2620 departs Mangalore daily at 11:00 and gets to Kundapura at 13:00.

maja_eco, why Kundapur?

Is it a good place?

Would it make a good place for a day trip from Mangalore?

(Train KR1 departs Kundapura at 18:46 for the 2-hour trip back to Mangalore)

It is convenient to take a bus to Kundapur instead of the train. There are express buses leaving Mangalore every 10 minutes to Kundapur. They take approximately 2hrs & 15 minutes to reach Kundapur. Stay at the Hotel Sharon. It's a nice neat hotel on the NH 17 junction. The trains are few and moreover, the railway station is a good 5-7 kms from Kundapur. Need help, let me know.

Hello Steven :-)

I am leaving this weekend to volunteer for a FSL workcamp in Kundapura. Would appreciate any info you can send about the bus from Bangalore, the Hotel Sharon, and your workcamp experience. Thanks so much for your time and kind consideration :-)

Hello Emily
You can try over night train (6517, Mangalore express) from Bangalore (20.50 hrs) to Mangalore (8.25 hrs) , then bus travel to Kundapur, which may take about 2-1/2 hours.
If you are unable to get train ticket, try " Durgamba' bus from gandhi nagar (near central bus stand of Bangalore) directly to Kunadpur. Ask for 'Volvo'buses as the condition of road is not good!!
Hotel sharon is worth staying and check out www.soans.com/Hotels.htm - 12k
recently one more nice hotel has been opened "julio international'. it is also in the high way between Mangaore & Kundapur.(NH 17)
Any way, try to visit " maravanthe' beach, where NH-17 cruises along with Arabian Sea on one side and the Sauparnika River on the other against a mountainous background of the Kodachadri Hills. It is about 18 Km from Kundapur.
Also Kollur- a tiny hamlet situated 40km Kundapur Town, This village lies at the foot of the Western Ghats, and is famous for the Mookambika temple, a Hindu pilgrim center.
wish you a happy stay at Kundapur

just to warn you... the camp sucked big time! granted it was in 2005 so i don't know if things have changed for the better in the meantime.
when i was there we did practically nothing at all, the coordinators knew almost nothing on turtles' biology and ecology, even less about conservation. there were no night patrols, which is essential if you actually want to find nesting turtles, no classes, we didn't go into schools...
my advice is if you still have time cancel this camp and look for some other project!

Kundapura Work Camp

Too late for me to cancel. Leaving tonight at 8:40. All I can do is make the best of the situation. Hopefully, as you said, the camp has changed since 2005. Thanks so much for the reply and....wish me luck!!

Hello Emily
Hope your trip will be friutful.
If you are interested I want to add certain information.
1. June- Oct will be 'Monsoon' season in South India and you can expect unexpcted heavy dounpour, hence be safe with an umbrella, wherever you go
2.Buy one mosquito repellant, before they suck your blood!!
3. Dont venture to swim either in sea or river,as the violent sea has sand and man in its grasp!!
4.In a small place like Kundapur, you cant expect western food items, but hope you will relish Idlis & Dosas!!
5.Use public transport systems like bus or autos intelligently
6.Lot of westerns are doing some project/ service in Kundapur, hope they will help you any time.
Let us know your work camp details
Enjoy
Dinesh

Kundapura

Hello Dinesh :-)

This is Emily's mother. She arrived in Kundapura yesterday after two days of travel and stayed the night at the Hotel Sharon. I spoke with her today and she sounds very excited and is very happy with the trip and the camp so far. Thanks so much for the advice and I will read this to her when she calls me again tomorrow. She has her cell phone and we can communicate that way through voice and texting. Take care and we are thrilled that Emily has this life-changing opportunity.

Luwanada Homestay

Hi Dinesh Rao

I stayed with a faimily when I visited Udaipur 10 years ago as a paying guest. They called the place Lauwanda Homestay. I think it was in the Shavri Colony area. I would like to know if it is still operating or how I could find out. I would also like to know how I could get a list of homestays in Udaipur.

Thanks Wayne
