Kochi to Bangalore/Mysore
We are planning to travel from Cochin to Bangalore/Mysore in Aug first week - three adults, four kids aged 1 to 7. The plan is to arrive in bangalore by train probably by Kanya Kumari express which according to the train schedule reaches around 5 Am. I'm not sure which is the best way to continue to Mysore from there given the 4 sleepy kids. The train schedule shows Kaveri exp leaving at 7 am from Blore to Mysore. I did not see anything earlier than that. I was wondering if we can book a rental car (with driver) in advance as it might be tough to walk to the bus station early morn. Looking for suggestions on best options available.
I went through the other threads and will probably book Hotel Mysore Mayura Hoysala. Haven't picked a place to stay in Blore yet. Looking for a good place to stay and go around so that we dont have to spend much time in traffic. I also need suggestions on places to visit, we will go to Mysore palace and Brindavan gardens on Friday to avoid the crowd. Which other places are good that would be fun for kids too? We plan to return to blore saturday night and go around the city on Sunday. I checked some other threads and found T K Falls, Bannerghatta National Park etc. close to Bangalore. Are these closeby? Appreciate all inputs. |

I can hook you up with a driver that will pick you up in bangalore and take you directly to Mysore. Nilgiris Nest is where we always stay upon arrival in bangalore...nice and clean.
I am from California but have many friends in Mysore...send me a PM and I will send you the info~ Best~ Tracy |

There should be a number of trains that go from Bangalore to Mysore in the AM. If you miss one, you can use your ticket on another. It's an easy ride. As for hotels, my wife and I loved the Ginger Hotel. It's very reasonable, kid friendly and minutes from the city attractions.

Thanks Tracy, I'll check out Nilgiris nest. I don't think I have the option to PM because I read somewhere there is a threshold of 10 posts to use PM. I'm in california too, small world
![]() Thanks Bruce, I'll check out Ginger hotel. The tariff seemed a bit higher than my budget but I'll call them up and see how it is. My first preference for Blore to Mysore is train, but I'm definitely on the lookout for a driver for going around in both cities. |

i would suggest you to take a cab with driver and head to mysore, rather than on train, bze u can see sreerangapatna(tipu sulthan fort) on the way and a quick view of bangalore also.
and yes ginger hotel guys overquote usually, has happened to me once, but they r flexible once u ask for it. |

There are 3 express trains departing at 5:10 AM(Kaveri Express), 6:25 AM(Mysore Express coming from Mayiladuthurai/Tanjore) and 6:55 AM(Mysore Express coming from Tuticorn) from Blore to Mysore.
Visit Chamundi Hills after 7 in the night to get a view of Mysore City being lit up. It's a sight not to be missed. You can plan 2 day trip to coorg(Madikeri) which is 120 kms from Mysore. Look out for related threads. Madikeri just after monsoon is a paradise. |

Going in cab rather than waiting for train makes sense. I'm just wondering if it will be too cramped for the three hour drive. Also thinking if its a better idea to spend first day in blore, so just check into a hotel in the morning and tour the city . The problem is that's a weekday and I dont want to be caught in peak traffic. The other advantage of going to Mysore on Friday is avoid the crowd for the palace and brindavan. Trying to get the plan right...

I would suggest you to go directly to Mysore,no point in wasting your time and energy in Bangalore.I would not advise Ginger hotel as they are business hotel's and provide very limited or no services. They don't provide food,no room service, you have to carry your own luggage's,beds are generally only 5 feet wide, but are safe and clean.
Spend not more than two nights in Mysore, then as suugested by thetrekguy head for either Coorg and Coonoor, you can infect cover both of them...but Coorg is amazing, forests, water falls, coffee plantation etc |

That was very helpful TrekGuy. So we can definitely take the train. I just read up on Coorg, it does seem heavenly. How long would the 120 km take to cover?

delhisix, we just watched the movie last week
yes, I'm definitely interested in Coorg, but my only worry is it is taking me further away from bangalore, I need to get back there to catch the train back to kochi. And I am also interested in getting a glimpse of the new bangalore, last time I went there was in 1996. |

Total journey time would be 5-6 hrs,Bangalore is a metropolitan town and you must have seen all of it in States(pubs, malls, traffic),may be kids would prefer it.

Coorg is 2.5 hours drive from Mysore.
Chikmagalur is 220 kms from Mysore and it's a 3.5 hours drive. Both the roads are awesome. If you plan either Chikmagalur or Coorg, spend atleast 2 days. |

I wonder why should u go to bangalore to reach mysore. It is a wate of time. If the travellers are old, it is advisable to take a train to bangalore and then to mysore.
better will be to get down at coimbatore and take a bus to mysore (4.5 hours). you also reduce the journey by 300km |
