Itinerary help - Dharmastala, Kukke etc.
Hello all..
Next week-end we are planning to cover Dharmastala, Kukke, Horanadu by the car. I am not an expert driver & just can travel around 50-60 speed & also would like to avoid night journeys. Can please somebody (who had undergone journey oflately) suggest me a good travel plan covering Dharmastala, Kukke, Horanadu (must places) & any other religious spots like Shringeri, Udupi etc., Thanks one and all for the guidelines, in advance. I would suggest you leave early (4-5 AM): Traffic is less, riding at dawn and mornings are easier and more relaxing.
As you might know road work is going on in the first many KMs of the road. Take the Shiradi Ghat road it-slef, the road is very very bad but its better than the rest (at the movement - Oct 2009 Update). After the ghats you will reach a Inter-crossing (Gundya) take a left here , Around 2x kms of wonderful road here. Kukke to Mangalore there is a shortcut which will save you a few, joins further down the highway, Dont take it, take the same road which you took to reach Subramanya. After you join back to the bang-mang and continue to mang, you will get the dharmastala road to you right. (While color vertical board). Continue to dharmastala after which to mangalore or udupi....... Expect the worst roads and you will be pleasantly surprised. |

Hi Srikanth
Thanks for your reply & regret delayed response from my side. My main intention is to cover Dharmasthala, kukke & horanadu from any friday to sunday. Adding with these 3 places any other piligrim places can I cover something like Sringeri, udupi, katil etc., etc., ? I do not wish to drive during nights. So under this circumstances a good itirnarary is being sought! Thanks, Jay ![]() |

Hi Velu,
Thanks for the link & information pasted therein. The thing is I am looking only for 3 days drive that too day journey only Apart from Kukkue, Dharmasthala, Horanadu is any other places I can cover up without straining much as I am taking aged members in the car. Sometimes I think Shringeri, Udupi also to include in the trip but due to poor knowledge about the topography and road condtions rightnow we have making me to think severely. If you have details kindly throw some light on this Thanks! Jay ![]() |

Hi Venu,
Thanks for your efforts being on sharing your knowledge. Definitely I will plan as you suggested. By the by, I hope getting accommodations at Shringeri & Mangalore is not that much problem it seems. Rather visiting Mangalore can we plan a visit to Katil Durga parameshwari temple ? Is halting is feasible over there ? Kindly let us know. Thanks, Jay ![]() |

@Mr.velu a wonderful and detailed travelogue
@Mr.Jayanna, The Above in itirnarary is good, However if you want to take it the other way round you could consider the below. Day 1 Start 4-5 AM Bangalore - Hassan - Through Shiradi Ghat - Gundya (Take left) - Subrahmanya If you reach here after around 1PM halt here for Lunch (parasadam), Continue to dharamastala (P.s: If I remember right temple closes at 1:30). Else if you finish dharshan by 1Pm then you could very well proceed to daramastala temple and alter do lunch there. Evening Proceed to mangalore from dharamastala. visit Gokarnanatheshwara Temple , Kateel , Mangaladevi Temple as per your interests. Night stay at mangalore Day 2 Proceed early to Udupi and visit the krishna temple, etc there. (could add Moodabidri here if required) (Visit Malpe Beach) - Kollur - Shringeri (Night Stay) Day 3 Visit Horanadu and then drive back to Bangalore Here the First Day would feel hectic, However you can always postpone things and take it slow therefore you could always postpone and take thing slowly. Else if you are on schedule then you could choose to visit Belur on the way back. Hassan - bangalore by nightfall day 3 Dont worry that you are not a expert driver . etc , take things slowly , No hurry and enjoy the trip. Please do post your travelogue so that it may benefit others too. Best of luck on you journey. |

In Shringeri, Accomodations are not guaranteed. And in one of our visits, "mutt Accomodation is Full" and we tried a lotttt and got a worst accomodation in a lodge in Shringeri for 750 Rs/ Night which was Horrible.Pls be aware, in Shringeri, there are very few private lodges which have very few rooms and nearest big town where you have lodges from that place again is Chicmagalur Or Manipal Or Mangalore Or Uppinangadi / Dharmasthala OR Horanadu. Please plan accordingly. And Yes, In Mangalore there is no issue for accomodations. And you may opt Mangalore for Night Stay rather than Kateel as rightly pointed out by Shrikanth ! Thanks for your comments Sri ! Cheers Velu |

Jay,
In Shringeri, ONLY temple Accomodation is best [When compared to private lodges] In Horanadu, ONLY Temple Accomodation is available In Kollur too , Devasthanam has many a accomodations right from 100Rs / Night upto A/C rooms. In Udupi, you have many choices for accomodation. In Dharmasthala , ALL accomodations are owned by only temple Devasthanam. In Kukke Subrahmanya, many a private lodges are there Food wise, you have to adjust with whatever is available in shringeri , Horanadu and Dharmasthala Kukke, you have some better hotels for food Udupi have many a choices for food In Kollur, Many a Kerala style hotels will be there on the way from Bus stand to the temple which are good [Taste wise]. Have a Fantastic and Safe Trip ! Regards Velu |
