How much must one climb in Badami?

My wife and I would like to visit Badami, but are worried that the climb up to the cave temples might be beyond us. We're about 70 and reasonably healthy, but our knees are not that great.

Any info? Thanks in advance.

The climb is not too bad. It's all stairs and you can do it in stages as there is lots to see while going up and down.
Beware of the monkeys, they are quiet agressive.

I have visited Badami with my wife and son years ago and the climb is very easy, don't worry about the stairs, the monkeys there are more dangerous than the stairs

Badami is a great place as well as Aihole, Pattadakal and other small villages in the area not much visited like Mahakoota and Banarshankari.

Thanks and ...

Thanks, Spike and Jorge, for your encouragement -- about the steps.

Are there special things to do to avoid problems with the monkeys?

How many days would you plan for seeing those sites without any rushing?

Thanks again.

You should be able to see all the sights in Badami in one day but It might be a good idea to stay a day longer and do Aihole and Pattadakal as a daytrip from Badami. As Jorge mentioned, they are worth a visit.

About the monkeys. Don't take any food out, if the monkeys see this, they'll come after you
Otherwise, no problem.

Enjoy the trip.

For the monkeys take an umbrella and swing it like a club. However, one bounced off my sis in laws head! The monkeys can be confrontational, show your fangs and face them down. Its part of the charm of the experience. Badami is a place I would love to go back to and spend more time in (maybe not with my sis in law). There is a good government museum in town. If you show the least interest in antiquities (I show a lot) they will provide a wealth of information. A hint is that the best ones may not be the ones people commonly go to. The museum has a model of the area..
