How do we get home from Hampi ?
Ok I know loads of you have helped and I have noted it all down..
Please dont chuck things at me and wail in exasperation....but.... I have got a place to stay in Hampi over the river and I notice the train back to Margao leaves Hospet at 6.30 am. So how do we get to Hospet from Hampi if the coracle boat does not run till 6.30 am. I have looked and still cant find anyone who has put this in thier blog or thread or holiday review. I have done so well organising our trip but has me stumped. Thank you for your patience......... ![]() |

I'm sure you can just arrange with the hotel where you're staying to be ferried across the river at whatever time you need.
If not, stay the last night in the village part of town I guess. To catch that train at 6:30, you might want to head to Hospet even that night I reckon, seeing how you'd probably want to get moving at around 4 AM, provided there are buses at all at that hour, which might well be the bigger problem. Get some sleep in Hospet instead.

I've not been to Hampi, but if I were in your situation I wouldn't worry about it.
Goa will be the next destination of maybe 60-70% of foreign tourists, and I'd imagine at least half of them take the train, so hundreds before you will have faced the same problem. I bet there's someone there who'll get you across the river, there always is. I was looking for somewhere on the Godavari river and worked out that is was on the south bank, I got buses then walked a few kms to where I thought it was, and you can guess the next bit, I noticed immediately that it was on the opposite bank, I then noticed a load of labourers delivering sand on a boat, got chatting to their boss and he got them to take me across the river, I had to give the 2 men in the boat Rs10 each. I've a feeling you'll remember that Rs10 when you're charged a whole lot more in Hampi. ![]()

You may also want to check if there's a telephone number you can ring to find out if the train is running to time, maybe 139, but ask your hotel.
Your train starts it's journey 31 hours earlier in Kolkatta, so could easily be a couple of hours late. The train was 32 minutes late yesterday. http://www.trainenquiry.com/RunningI...26%2f04%2f2008 (Look at the '26%' in the url/address bar, you change that to change the day) http://www.trainenquiry.com/indexNS.aspx |

So why not ask so straightaway? Really desperate to have things chucked at you eh?
You'll find all the trains sites you need to check for schedules in the "travel links" link in my signature, in post #2 above, or in Steve's "Train Information" link. |

Sleeper Class = Rs 80 (not air con) Train 01048 departs Hubli daily at 23:00 and gets to Madgaon at 05:40 3-tier air con = Rs 351 Sleeper Class = Rs 145 Both trains start locally, so should run close to time. You could just get the overnight bus. ![]() |

You're in the fortunate position of knowing what you're talking about, we don't, what website are you trying to use?

![]() So how's about the idea of heading to Hospet in the evening, getting a nice meal and some sleep in whatever guesthouse, then rising early (but not by far as early as you'd need to from Hampi) to catch that morning train? Would seem by far the least hasslesome to me, and those few last hours spent mostly asleep in Hampi hardly seem like a loss. Am I right thinking you'll have some kids in tow as well? I may be wrong, but thought you mentioned somewhere you'll be traveling with the family. |

HA! result ..Briliant thank you. now what time do the buses run to Hospet??? JOKE!!!
thats what I mean - being so bogged down with getting stuff sorted into some sort of a plan (not into every tiny detail) that the obvious evades me!... I dont have kids in tow....hes 22... and a real 'go with the flow' guy he would just hitchike back ![]() |

? Y'r welcome, only I already suggested it in post #2 (maybe I edited it in after you read it; it pays to read back on your thread sometimes to see if afterthoughts were added. This seems to be especially true of people who have email notification to threads on, that mail message you receive may not be the complete story.)
You're going in December and have been before right? Don't get too worked up, I'm sure you'll manage. |

2847 and 2848 only run 4 days a week, so you have to get the right days.
Have you checked the other thread you started? |

<cross-posting again. I'll let Steve handle it from here.>
http://www.trainenquiry.com/ only does direct routes, it won't give you connecting options like the ones Steve gave (unless you know where to connect). (Checking now: It gives three options Hospet (HPT) - Madgaon (MAO) actually, at 6:30, 8:50, and 9:25. Note that these all run on different days, and none of them all week. What you want is their "Find your train" button, top left.) |
