Smile Hampi

Wanting to know the easiest way to get to HAMPI from MUMBAI?

Is it best to take a fast overnight train to GOA and maybe get a driver from there to Hampi - How long the drive? Over 2 days?

Or train fro Mumbai to Hospet, although that seems long and drawn out?

Didnt really want to fly... thats the problem!

Dont want to go by bus, but happy to use trains, if express ones, and overnight.

Is Nagerhole the best wildlife park in South India, or does anybody of have views.

Many thanks

Train No 1035 SHARAVATHI EXP starts from Mumbai at 21:30 and after 15 hrs, 15 min reaches Hubli (741 km)at 12:45 . It runs only on Tuesday.
From UBL - HUBLI JN at 17:00 take Train No 6591 HAMPI EXPRESS to reach Hospet at 19:50. Then taxi or bus to Hampi.
Or take a bus direct from Hubli to Hampi.

From what I've heard the connection Goa-Hampi isn't all that great. There's a thread on it here: Goa - Hampi, new train details.

So seeing how you want to train it straight from Mumbai, I'd look into a train to Hospet yes (or possibly Guntakal or something? Hubli is also something to look into yes.) See what you come up with at http://www.indianrailways.gov.in/ , http://www.indiagroove.com/ or http://www.trainenquiry.com/ . You'll need a bus to Hampi unless there are tracks there now, not very far from Hospet (half hour or thereabouts I think).

I've done this with a stopover at Bijapur which was very slow, but a through ride could be lots quicker. Not even sure if I did the second bit by train.

ps the Indiagroove Trainfinder (beta version so check your findings on one of the other sites if you can) seems to suggest Hospet with a (very late) nightly layover at Guntakal yes: around 18.5 hrs. total, having you arrive in the early morning. Seems to be daily. There seem to be slightly lengthier alternate connections (interestingly going via Belgaum and Hubli I see now; these appear to run twice a week, with a third possibility via yet another route) that would have you arrive in the evening; doing so and with possible delays and getting out of the station and on to the buses and having to look for food and a bed in Hampi etc., you might consider spending the night in Hospet before moving on.

Going to Goa first then having to arrange something there won't help I think, it's just not very close

btw The layover time with all but one of these trains would be very short (30-20-no minutes), rendering the above tricky. Adding a layover time of 2 hours seems to produce some lengthier results (20-22 hrs.), five times a week.

Rather than hiring a driver from Goa, I would still believe it could be cheaper (for one person) to fly to Bangalore and take the overnight Hampi train.

With the long list of flight options, I think you should find something really cheap for Mumbai - Bangalore... (though I am not too sure on the current rates)
