hampi - hippy eco type community
hey folks,
a friend told me about a community of westerners and indians who had started a kind of intentional community somewhere on a hilltop area of hampi. they were in the process of setting up their land so that it would support farming. they publish a newsletter that was talking about healthcare and brotherhood and that type of stuff. anyone heard of it? |

I didn't see any land on the surrounding mountains that had soil capable of farming. They are all barren rock everywhere.
If you cross the river to Virapapur , you will find lodges that entertain only white skinned people. It is like an apartheid practiced on Indians on their own land by the dim-witted nepali hotel boys and restaurant owners. The crowd consists of Israeli drop-outs escaping military service and practicing marijuaNirvana, fugtives staying away from their own country's police, and those that don't fit into their own European society and find the cheap prices charged for services in India as the signs of a spiritually uplifted peoples. That is until they get so broke that they get kicked out from their hangouts on the beaches and temple towns... cheers BTW This year due to the rising rupee vs dollar, the Israeli's didn't come that much, and Indians can try their luck there... but there is really nothing out there , the temple side of the town is a better place to live in. Gobbledegeek, I am sure you meant to write some in that post somewhere, otherwise it is a gross generalisation, and like most of those, inaccurate.
I agree with the lodge statement partially; partially because that kind of behaviour is not the sole preserve of the Nepalis, and is seen in pockets throughout India. Generally, I disagree with the entire tone of your post, sorry.

I may say hat I was in Hampi just before Xmas. I stay at the "other" side of the river and even thought Gobbledegeek description its bit exaggerated, probably for humouristic reasons, his definition about the place is quite accurate under my point of view
