A slightly different take .I allowed a hotel to book the tickets for me (lazy?) and was booked in a 2nd class sleeper , for ,in Indian standards a short journey ,and the carriage was populated by western tourists .Ordinary chair class would maybe have been more interesting .

We had a mix of all sorts in our sleeper and the food bought at the stations and on the train was better than UK railways (well that not hard I suppose)

Another option is the KSTDC hotel in Kamalapuram. This village is situated on the other side of the Vijayanagara. From there you can take a bus or rickshaw to Hampi it is about 5 km. Of course there it is also possible to hire a rickshaw from there for the whole day.

Goa to Hampi by train!

For Goa > Hampi go for Amaravati Express.
Vasco-da-Gamma (VSG) > Hospet (HPT)

I like the look of that tea shop: might go there. I hear there are some ruins nearby, too.

(Some time back, a new director of London's Victoria and Albert Museum tried marketing the place as a great cafe with a not-bad museum attached )

Hi beach,
Your post about Hampi is really wonderful. Very informative.I plant to go to Hampi during the second week of January2008. What about hotel bookings? Easy to get rooms without previous reservation? Can you give any phone numbers for previous booking?
Thank yoi.

I used Beach's great post to plan my 5-day stay in Hampi. Had the greatest time. (Except I had a *@!!&~ time locating the 108 shiva lingas, but that's because I have a *@!!&~ sense of orientation). Wanted to say, many thanks Beach !

A quick update on the original info :
The coracle behind Vittupaxa is now replaced by a 'mission boat', a wooden flat boat carrying a dozen people.
Price is 10 Rs / person.
Renting a coracle at the Kondarma temple will cost 40 / 50 Rs per person. Allegedly for 30 mn, the ride will last 10 mn.
The ticket for Vittala temple + Lotus Mahal is 250 Rs (for foreigners, including camera).
The ticket for Vittupaxa with a camera is 50 Rs.
Rickshaw to / from Hospet is still around 100 Rs. I found travellers to share the ride each way.
Beware : if you enter Hampi in a rickshaw (or taxi, I suppose), you will be stopped at a gate and asked to purchase an "official" 10 Rs ticket "necessary" to enter Hampi. I refused and started getting out of my rickshaw, saying I would walk the rest of the way and pay only half the fare. The rickshaw wallah urgently waved the ticket guy away...

Enjoy your stay !
