On the plane back from my first India trip I met a girl who had spent a bit of time in Hampi - she'd had a bunch of photos developed already and looking through them was when I realised I absolutely had to go back.
I went there on my recent trip and was lucky enough to arrive at Holi - so the dusty main bazaar was covered in colour and full of welcoming (and paint throwing) locals. The surrounding landscape is incredible, and the ruins scattered througout amazing, it's a very worthwhile trip out ![]() |

Great Post, beach.
One more bit of info...... The unofficial bouldering/rock-climbing World champion Chris Sharma has made Hampi very popular amongst die-hard rock-climbers. His DVD "The Pilgrimage" is all about rock-bouldering at Hampi. So much so that you get all the rock climbing equipment and crash pads etc. on HIRE at Hampi!! Keep it up, beach

I'm linking it all to the respective places in the main post I'm explaining.
Much more to come.... Also I've addeded some more to the main text "The bus to Hampi " and "Bicycle & Scooter Trail" is added in between. I think it's a mess to fiddle with the post (when it's huge). So please tolerate my mess for some time (well for some long time...) till I post everythinhg ok Thakns for that, I'm not a travel writer. Thought dirty, my job is not as dirty as that of writers ![]() |

Beach, when is the best time to visit Hampi, weather-wise and crowd-wise? I presume with its close proximity to the west coast, it gets pretty crowded over Decemebr/January. Is this correct?
Thanks! Conor. |

One good thing is that it's so wast you can 'escape' the crowd if you weant. But the problem is about the accomodation, train booking etc I'm going to add one more section about the festivels, seasons etc to the main post. May be a bit later. As any thing from Holi to Diwali is celibrated in Hampi. |

The chillum people are ofcourse the people who land here in hampi after the Goa Rush (january) They mainly live on the far side of the riverbank and the other "normal" tourist live on the "town" side of the bank. I liked Hampi better in November than in June. Big difference. Allthough Both times where pretty crowded. But not over crowded..... One should allso remmber to be extra carefull in hampi.... There is theft and such things going on and you might not wanne stay two long on remote and dark places when night aproch.... |

I found April to be a great time to be in Hampi. Really boiling obviously (40 degrees + at times) but practically deserted. Had all those temples to myself.
Well, if you ignore the ubiquitous postcard sellers, at least ...
