Thank you Khandoma for the comments!

Your Hampi photos look great. The Vibrations of Hampi is one of the best 'golden sunset' photos i've seen.

salempeacock,

Jan is the peak season. An advanced booking is better....

Many thanks Beach, so glad you liked the pictures. And they're photoshop-free, too ! Thanks again for being the inspiration that pushed me towards Hampi.

train from hyderabad?

I dont know if this question has been raised already, but does anyone know if there is a train from Hyderabad that stops in Hospet? The original post says #7227 Kacheguda-Vasco de Gama stops there but it seems according to the trains at a glance website that it doesnt leave from Kacheguda anymore... just trying to get this cleared up cause I really hate the bus, especially for an overnight trip. Thanks!

http://www.indiagroove.com/ Would suggest there are two direct night trains all week, 9-12 hours. Best to check results with official site at http://www.indianrailways.gov.in/ .

Beach left behind this note (an addition to his site) just recently, but not sure if this is useful for you, probably not very: Bangalore to Hampi

Wow, what a great post!

I'll be dragging the family to Hampi in February via the Amaravathi Express. Couldn't help but notice the climate chart edging towards 40 Celsius that time of the year

Am I going to melt?

i'm getting the overnight bus from panaji which leaves at 19:00 and takes 10 hours

which means i'll get to hospet before daybreak (if it does actually take 10 hours lol.) i'm staying across the river at shanthi and i'm worried that the little ferry won't be running.... will it? the lonely planet says it starts at 7am but i'm learning that it can be very very wrong at times

i'm vee dot excited about hampi

Warning

this is primarily for phunkymonkey and/or anyone else traveling to Hampi during the next week or so. I've just arrived today (1/24/08) to find out that there's some sort of official visit happening around the first of february, and for some reason i'm not entirely clear on, at least all of the temples, ruins, etc. will be closed to tourists, and there is talk of the entire village shutting down as of jan 28th or 29th. i'm not sure how this affects the guesthouses across the river or in surrounding villages which tend to host hampi tourists. but it's something to be aware of for the next couple days. i'm not sure how long the official visit is to last, unfortunately (probably no longer than a few days or so, i would think). i'm wondering if it might also affect travel through the general area and to places that tend to be on the same traveler circuit.

even here, it's hard to get good info on the closures, and the first 3 times i was told about it i thought it was BS from rickshaw drivers and touts trying to get me to opt for "uncle's" guest house over in some other village. nobody where i was staying in goa knew about it, even those who'd just returned from hampi in the last few days. it seems to be very real, though... phunkymonkey, i would triple check your reservation if it falls around those dates.

A couple of questions to the Hampi-experts of the forum:

- Planning to spend two days in mid-April, do I need to book in advance or can I just arrive there and look for the best place to stay? How many chances do I have to find easyly an accomodation in that part of the year? I ask this question mainly because I'm finding almost impossible to make an advanced reservation via email: the very few places having an email address (available somewhere on the web, on Indiamike or on www.roughguides.com) don't reply, or I get from them a sad "message undeliverable" reply!

- I will arrive from Tirupati by train, and I will be (I should be) at Hospet station very early in the morning, 5:15 scheduled time; can I find buses to Hampi at this hour, or can I take a rickshaw or taxi to reach the village?

- The third one of the two questions is: how long can I survive with the average temperatures which I can expect in April, taking into account that I am a good long-distance walker (and a well-trained cyclist too)?

Bye! Gianni
