Hampi birthday to me ?
Hello All,I will be celebrating my birthday in Hampi this december. Can anyone suggest a cool place to have dinner ? Good food (Indian of course) is my priority. Bad food would ruin my evening. Then obviously a pleasant atmosphere would be nice, and a good setting a bonus, but food definitely comes first. If nothing comes to mind, then perhaps you can suggest a nice place for drinks ? IMers in Hampi around Dec.10, you're more than welcome to join me ! Thanks for your ideas. Take care, |

When I was in Hampi during my birthday, had dinner at the Mango Tree restaurant beside the river. Lots of atmosphere and good vegetarian food, but no booze. Be sure to carry a flashlight as the road and path get very dark at night. Take time to enjoy the fire flies around the banana grove and frog songs by the little stream. Truly a magical place for a birthday dinner.

Thank you, Wanderer22 ! That sounds lovely, a perfect birthday place indeed. I love veggie food and won't mind about the booze - there will be other places for that, I'm sure.
And thanks for the flashlight tip. Will let you know how dinner went ! Take care. |

Mango Tree - most definitely the best food I came across in Hampi.
Have a good one . . . |

Looks like a done deal then. Let me ask you this, Moo and Wanderer22 : since the food is good and the place nice, do I need to make reservations ? I might be on my own, or there might be a lot of us, I don't know yet. Is it worth it to drop by at lunchtime to book a table for the evening - and will they actually save a table for me ?
Thanks for the recommendation, |

Defenitley, Mango Tree is the place to go. Loved the place and the food. But I don`t think they take reservations. But beginnig of December is not yet peak season and the 10th is a weekday, so shouldn`t be a problem. But keep in mind, it`s a ten to fifteen minute walk outside of Hampi. So when you go there alone, perhaps look for some other guests to walk back in the dark. Just as an precaution.
Enjoy your trip! |

Excellent advice, chaos 76,thanks a lot. I'll definitely go there, and be sure to round up an escort.
When you say "early December is not peak season yet", does it mean I stand a good chance to find accomodation at Hampi guest houses without a reservation ? I don't mind reserving ahead, but prices are usually higher that way than when one just shows up and negociates a bit. Thanks everyone. |

They also serve breakfast and I imagine would be happy to set up a reservation for a birthday dinner. Doesn't hurt to ask. In 2005 there were limited tables of the western kind, but quite a few of the low sit on the ground variety. The dining area is outdoors under a huge old mango tree that's complete with a swing hanging from a high branch.
Shoes are left at the door and the Mango Tree is a no smoking zone. Wanderer22 |

Could be wrong about the no smoking?
Just looked at some photos and I see what looks like ash trays. Will attach some photos to give you an idea of the place....Wanderer22 |

What a lovely place ! Thank you so much for taking the trouble to post the photos, they are greatly appreciated. That place - actually, that swing - is where I want to be on my birthday, no question.
Interesting, that they serve breakfast. So I can go there in the morning before my sightseeing day to arrange reservations. If they wont take reservations then I'll still have breakfast... And I don't mind at all sitting on the ground, hope my guests won't either. (I do mind the smoke when I'm eating though, I'm such a food purist. But then again I'm prepared to sit on my attitude for the duration of my trip.) Many thanks, Wanderer22 ! |
