hampi accommodation

I'll be in hampi for a few days in early January and would like to pre-book some accommodation. My questions are :

- where in the area to stay ? it seems that accommodation is of a higher standard across the river ? and that one can get a beer there but not in the sacred centre ? but is it safe and is there enough to do in the evenings - ie. are you basically stuck in your guesthouse all night or are there other restaurants etc around ?

- can anyone recommend a good place where it's possible to pre-book over e-mail or internet ? I'm looking for somewhere with a private bathroom ideally

Thanks !

Hi
Last weekend made a trip to Hampi, hence my observations:

in Hampi its only backpacker style guesthouses meaning you will get only cot. Toilet may or may not be attached. however i did see one air conditioned (a/c) guest house. however considering month of january, a/c is not required. the price range varies from 200-500 INR approx.

nearest proper town is hospet which is 10 KM from hampi. hospet to hampi can be travelled in bus or auto. there are few hotels, although the only proper 3 star hotel is Malligi. you can book room in advance over telephone or mail. room rents - non a/c rooms 300-500 INR + tax (12.5%), a/c rooms 1500-2400 INR + tax (12.5%). 500 INR rooms are quite decent rooms. the hotel has got a very good resturant and bar.

after dark you can roam in the small market place in front of virupakshi temple or spent time dining in mango tree resturant. there are no beer shops in hampi and i have no idea whether they allow you to have beer inside guest houses.
