Great Food in Mysore
Great Food in Mysore
Been back for a while, but just found the card for a place we all had a Birthday meal at...One of the best meals we had in all of India.
Ilapur `The Taste of Andhra`
2721/1-2 Sri Harsha Road
Mysore-570-001
Tel: 442878
A great opportunity to try Andhra food if you cannot make it to the State itself.
Highly recommended

here is a small list
1. Mylari Tiffin Room, in the Hotel Mahadeswara, Nazarbad Main Rd, has good South Indian food. Great dosas are served in the morning only. (Supposed to be THE place for dosas)
2. Samrat, in the Hotel Indra Bhavan, Dhanvantri Rd, good place for north indian food, south indian food is also served
3. Indra Paras Café, Sayaji Rao Rd, has good South and North Indian vegetarian food
4. I forgot the name of this place, but its a rooftop restarant on top of hotel shanti sagar, Kuvempu Nagar (its a bit far from the city center but for indian food enthusiasts, its a very good place). The best one is the north karnataka traditional lunch.
5. GTR - Gayathri tiffin room, krishnamurthy puram, a bit far from the downtown - south indian food, a sweet called 'kaseri bath' is the best one here
6. Penguin , Dhanvantri rd, good place for snacks and ice creams
There are many other good places like Nalpak...
and dont miss 'MYSORE PAK' from guru sweets on Sayagi Rao rd in downtown
I know the best of the street food too, if interested let me know

In Mysore, as Batistuta said, Bajjis , bondas, Paani puris etc are available and if you ask what's the Much Favoured one among the localites , I could say " Churmuri" [ Puffed Rice with Onion,Chillie etc...] !!..
And Hotels wise, As far as I know Hotel RR [Nearer to Palace] is famous for "Non-Veg Andhra Style" and the vegetarian restaurant in "Hotel Dasaprakash Campus" is Much much famous [ Even among the Local Population]...
And Apart from that, you have the usual Subway, Pizza hut, Dominos Etc....
Hope this helps !!

Let's see if there is life in this thread yet.
I'm staying in Mysore for a while and I've been interested in trying different types of Indian food. I eat mostly South Indian Iyengar food at home.
So does anyone have any suggestions for particular cuisines in Mysore? I saw the Andhra recommendation at the top of the thread. Any Punjabi/Gujurati/Tibetian recommendations etc etc. I know Bangalore is a better place for this- but I figured I'd ask.
I'll mention a couple of non-South Indian places near me.
At the end of Kalidasa Road in Vijaynagar, there is a place called "Olive" which has Iranian food and Iranian breads for sale.
At the other end of Kalidasa Road, there is a vegetarian Punjabi restaurant. The name escapes me at the moment, but if I remember I'll walk by and then edit this post.
And then there is Eidelweiss Cafe. An Austrian cafe just off Kalidasa Road in Gokulam. (It's searchable on google maps)

Based on My experience , the following places are worth a try.1) Hotel RRR Andhra Style Veg / Non-Veg Restaurant [ In Gandhi Square and another branch near Palace West Gate] --> One in Gandhi Square is not advisable for Dine-in as it's toooo crowded and the place is not clean also
2) Hotel Zamindar [ 8 kms from mysore Bus stand / Railway station] in Hunsur/Madikeri/Coorg/Mangalore Road and it's authentic Tamilnadu Chettinadu food. Nice Ambience. Bit costly and Food Quality is good and Quantity is Minimal
3) Hotel Sai Nidhi [ 6 weeks old in Mysore] --> Exceptional Food . Authentic Andhra Veg/ Non-veg [ It's in Vijayanagara Second Stage near King's burger / Reliance Fresh] --> Best in taste and service. Neat and Clean place. Non A/C .Prices are nominal for the quality of food and Service [ Veg Unlimited meals is 80Rs ]
4) Hotel Golden Landmark [ 7 kms from Mysore Bus stand/ Railway station in KRS/Brindavan Gardens Road] --> Toooooo Good for Buffet Lunch and it's 240 Rs /Person and the ambience is toooo good
5) Hotel Olio [ 4 kms from Mysore Bus stand /Railway station in Bamboo Bazaar road / New Sayyaji Rao Road] --> Authentic Oriental / Continental Cuisine. No Buffet and only A-la-carte . They arrange a party hall on Request with no additional charge. No Alcohol.Worth a Try
6) Hotel Mughal Paradise [ 4 kms from Mysore Bus stand/ Railway Station in Bamboo Bazaar road / New Sayyaji Rao road] --> Fantastic Mughal Cuisines--> Not for Relaxed Dine-in as it will be bit crowded all the time .
7) Hotel RajaBhojanam [ 14 kms from Mysore Bus stand/ Railway Station in KRS / Brindavan Gardens road] --> 8 weeks old hotel in Mysore--> Exceptionally Good South Tamilnadu Taste --> Ambience is Good. A/C Section is there.
8) King's Burger [ Vijayanagar Second Stage . Adjacent to Reliance Fresh] -->Chicken Shawarma [?! Spelling not sure] is Very good. 35 Rs/ Piece --> Best for Take-Aways as Dine-in place will be too hot always .
9) Hotel Fish Land [ Mangalore Style] [ Adjacent to Bharat Cancer hospital just in ring road and another branch in Mysore -Bangalore road] --> Too good a taste on Sea Food and chicken Dishes. It's Dhaba type with Alcohol Serving and it's best suites for Take Aways Rather than Dine-ins. Worth a try just for the exceptional taste
10)Hotel Bhattacharya [ Will confirm the name shortly ] Near to Devaraj urs Road --> Authentic Rajasthani / Gujrati Food.
11)Authentic Tibetan Food --> Very near to MORE Mega Mall near Devaraj Urs Road. This I did not tried till now BUT many of those Tibetans who come from Kushal Nagara / Bylekuppe [Tibetan Settlement] to Mysore For sight seeing / Purchase can be seen in this hotel. Not sure of the ambience but the hotel is in a commericial complex but it's supposed to be the most authentic Tibetan Cuisine.
12) Austrian Cafe[ Authentic Austrian Food] --> This is in parallel road to KD Road [Kalidasa Road]
13) Subway Closed their Branches in Mysore a month back
14) No MC Donalds / KFC in Mysore
15)Hotel Biriyani Paradise [In New Sayyaji Rao Road just adjacent to "Mysore Private bus" bus stand] --> Very very Good Biriyanis [High quality Basmati rice and Mughal Biriyani] --> Suitable for Take aways only as Dine-in will always be overcrowded with Big Family Crowds.
Hope this is of some help
Velu

Wow, thanks Velu! This is exactly the kind of information I was looking for. I hope others get some use out of this thread as well.
If you've tried both the Andhra places you listed- do you have a preference between them? I've definitely heard of the place near the palace (There is a Gandhi square establishment and then the one on Sri Harsha Road?). That seems to have some reputation. Didn't know about the one in Vijayanagar.
Also- any suggestions for continental buffets at some of the hotels like Metropole, Southern Star (or whatever it is called now) etc.? I know they are pretty damn expensive, but I've been thinking about treating myself to a continental breakfast once before my trip ends.
