Hi
Did any of u go to Gokarna lately?
I went there 10 years ago and was wondering if it had changed much and if it is very crowded now?
Any info welcome.

Much more crowded
Very much a little tel Aviv
Still amazing though and retains the same vibe

No parties.
they did try but the locals stopped any idea of it immediatly as quite rightly they stated this is a holy site and we tolerate you being here
So more power to Gokarna

The biggest threat to the place is the property developers getting their greedy littkle claws into the area

Hope this helps ...Remember after 10 years you'll surely be disappointed as I was with many places but the vibe that took you to these places in the first place remains, its just not so evident at first look

Gokarana 10 years ago, what a laugh I was there then, before they had electricity on to Om beach, just lanterns and candles at night, great evenings with chillums round the fire & no techno to spoil the peace - HEAVEN on earth!!

Dont bother with Om beach after mid december. A huge 5 star hotel is coming up. The view from the cliff between the Om beach and Half moon beach is pathethic now thanks to the huge concerete monument being errected

I stumbled accross Gokarna while touring India on a350 Bullet 18 months ago.
I'd stopped for petrol on the main road to Mangalore, happened to look back and saw the sign. What a great impulse decision to have a look! Went for a couple of nights ended up staying two months.A lot of people go for the beaches but I fell in love with the town - there is a powerful religious feel to the town - even car street in the early morning late evening. The tank is fantastic at these times. I learnt a lot about the Hindu religion and experienced the Shivaratri festival and other events. It's a great shame that a big hotel is going up, I really hope it doesn't impinge upon the quality of life for the indian people in the town itself. In 11000 km of travelling in India and Nepal no place left a more powerful and positive impression on me. Hope to return next year.

sudheer, I don't see why you're so upset about this resort. It's not even very close to Om Beach, rather it's on the road that goes behind the beaches (I had a drink there a few months back; the bartender couldn't distinguish whisky from rum). It barely gets a glimpse of any beach, just woods! And to me it didn't look like a "huge concrete monument", just a few buildings that were quite well hidden. I'm not a fan of destroying landscape with huge hotels, either, and in this case that hasn't been done (if we are talking about the same establishment).

I do recall another resort area being built right behind Om Beach, but that was still very much under construction in February 2005.

Sprocket, I agree with you 100% on the special atmosphere in Gokarna village. Magic!

"Oh, you don’t have to confine yourself to OM Beach. When you stay in the resort you can be adventurous and take a boat ride to Paradise Beach, and uninhabited beach that justifies its name. After wafting on the crystal clear water and fanned by the cool breeze from the sylvan forests, you can let the golden velvety sands to massage your limbs. It can be exclusively for your relish if you wish. Water sports."
"In the OM Beach water sports activities like surfing, Skiing, parasailing, banana Boat cruise etc are arranged under the supervision of qualified and experienced instructors."

This is the worst. Glad I`ve been there before this banana boats...
