If you're going swimming (good for your knee I guess?) the northern half of Om (near Namaste) is gentler than the southern bit, where everyone referred to the breakers as 'the washing machine'.
Say hi to the friendly brown dog that lives at Namaste, he rules the roost. Have fun, I'm jealous . . . |

Bus/train, Margao - Gokarna
Hi Sharon
I've travelled Margao - Gokarna several times in the past, and I'll be re-tracing my steps at the end of next week (26th, I think). The choice is to wait for the 13.30 train from Margao, or to take a bus (or buses). I've found that both methods get you to Gokarna at around the same time - there are buses that leave around 11.30, but they only get you to Gokarna slightly earlier than the train would. The choice is whether you want to wait at the train station for a few hours, or spend those few hours rattling through the countryside on a bus. The last time I travelled this route was a couple of years ago, so things might have changed, but I doubt it. Have fun, Gary |

Margao - Gokarna
Hi Sharon
I'm writing from Gokarna town, which is very, very quiet at the moment. Trains from Margao to Gokarna leave at 14.20 and 21.30 (133 km, Rs. 22) It took about 3 hours when I made the journey a few days ago - I don't know if this is normal, but there are a lot of delays on the Western Railway at the moment, due to engineering works. My train from Mumbai was 3 hours late arriving at Margao, but luckily the train to Gokarna left 2 hours late. The tourist office at Margao railway station couldn't tell me the times of any buses direct to Gokarna, but they said there were frequent buses to Karwar, from where it's fairly easy to get a bus to Gokarna. You'd need to get a rickshaw to the bus station, I think. You need to register with the police on arrival in Gokarna, there's a checkpoint on the way in to town. If you arrive at the same time as a lot of other foreigners this could take a bit of time - there was only one registration book available the other evening, and the queue moved very slowly. I hope that's useful, Gary |

Kudle Beach etc.
Hi Sharon
Yeah, hanging out on the beach can be quite exhausting, and there just aren't enough hours in the day..................... There aren't that many places open on the beach yet, I'm staying at Ganga cafe at the north end of Kudle. Almost everywhere on the beach is fairly basic, but Ganga's a very cool place. I think the place next door to Ganga has the best food, but the half-dozen or so places on Kudle all serve up pretty much the same things. The weather's been pretty unsettled, and the sea can be quite dangerous - three people (2 Indians and a resident Brit) drowned yesterday, and the police have banned swimming from Kudle today. Om beach is much more sheltered for swimming, but the water there currently has a lot of post-monsoon vegetable debris. Kudle's fine, I think, as long as you're careful. The tides are calming down as we get away from the full moon, and the weather is clearing so things are getting better by the day. I'm planning to stay around at least until Divali (9th), and then check the weather in the hills (currently very dreary). Maybe see you around, Gary |

Hi guys -- I just happened upon this thread by lucky coincidence!
I'm looking for a good beach town for sometime between Jan 20th or so and the beginning of February (haven't exactly worked out the specific dates yet). What I really want is somewhere I can find accomodation when I arrive, as opposed to booking in advance. Also, something more "budget" oriented and basic, not a resort. I'd be looking to stick around for a week or 10 days. Is Gokarna good for this? How does it compare, price-wise, with somewhere like Palolem or Agonda? Will I show up and find everything booked out for the whole season? It doesn't so much matter what the "scene" is, or whether it's crowded (though I don't want to go somewhere where the beach is completely spoiled). I mainly just want a very basic beach shack to spend the week in, enjoying the fact that I've escaped the New York City grind and am FINALLY in India. |
