Hello

We are planning to take a 4 day vacation end of October by Car. We want to goto Wayanad but we also wanted to do Kabini. Looking at the KRL rates we decided we cannot afford that.

But reading the posts in this foruM I found that there are cheaper alternatives at some distance from Nagarhole NP.

So we are planning to Start from bangalore --> Nagarhole --- > Wayanad

1. My question is can we also cover Coorg or Bandipur in this trip. ? Rather is it worth it. ? I guess we will get to see Irupu falls.

2. After visiting Nagarhole NP, will the Wayanad wildlife / Bandipur be worth covering ?

Please post your comments and help us make the best out of our trip.

I really appreciate the posts in this form. Great work guys.

Thanks

hi T,

4 days is OK for your planning..

1. you can cover coorg and avoid bandipur.. because nagerhole is enough for wildlife trip. even if u want to see another wild life trip, near by nagerhole ,tholpetty wildlife sanctuary is available on the way to wayanad from nagerhole. my opinion is,try nagerhole only and avoid other sanctuaries.

2. IMO,not a special.avoid others and enjoy in coorg and wayanad.

day:1:bangalore-bylekuppe budhist monastry-nisargadama.if you are all friends or group, try to stay in nisargadama.best place.pre booking is must.

day:2: morning,if you want to see the elephants trainings, try to go to dubare elephant camp, around 15kms from nisargadhama before 9 am(its important). if u dont like it,local sight seeing in madikeri(abby falls, raja seat, etc etc)if u have time, try to talacauvery. and go to nagerhole(around 70 kms).

day:3:early morning, wildlife santuary visit..and then irupu falls..and then almost you reached wayanad border. and go to kuruva island area.. i dont know the present conditions of availability to visiting this place.if possible, try.then you will try to stay nearby(4kms) kuruva island,VARNAM HOMESTAY..best place.again pre book is important.

day:4:local sight seeing.. pookote lake,some falls,etc.etc.

will you stay day 4 or return back???

if you will stay, try next day to sulthan bathery for edakkal caves and then return..

hope this helps,

Hi Suresh Babu

Thanks a lot for the details answer. I got the feeling that Nagarhole is better or rather if I see one, I can avoid others like bandipur. So thanks for confirming. Maybe bandipur for next time

Your itenerary is excellent.

We are there or 3 nights and 4 days.

I was thinking will it be better to goto Wayanad first and then goto Nagarhole -- > and see some of coorg ?. THis way we will have a short trip on way back.

We wanted to cover everything in Wayanad like caves, falls etc. Is it worth covering everything ?> I am follwing wayanad.org site

Thanks

hi guys,
TRIP - A,
Day 1 = Start early morning from bangalore, have your breakfast at maddur in hotel maddur tiffany's ( specialty maddur vada's ), proceed towards, hunsur have early lunch and reach nagarahole by 3pm so that you in time for the evening safari(pm velu from mysore always recommends banglore-mysore- h.d.kote-nagarahole and i have travelled up to h.d. kote might be 25 years, I normally take this route). Try to book the cottages at nagarahole itself thru the forest department at malleswarm. If you are not staying at nagarahole you might have to leave the place by 6 pm as the forest gates will close by 6 pm and reach kutta a small town outside nagarahole where you can find some good home stays.
Day 2 = Pack you breakfast and start trekking toward irrupi falls, and try to visit tirunelli temple in the kerala border or you can visit the wild life safari again in the evening. Alternatively you can try the early morning safari and visit irrupu falls and retire for the day at the hotel.
Day 3 = Pack your lagguage and travel to madikere thru the coffee estates of south coorg and reach talacauvery, come to madikere town by afternoon visit the abbi falls, raja seat etc and stay at madikere(hotel mayura).
Day 4 = Leave madikere early morning so that you are dubare elephant camp by 8 am,have your breakfast at dubera, travel to bylkuppe tibetian settlement, golden budda and arrive at hunsur to have a late lunch. Drive back to bangalore and if you have the time visit rangtittu bird santuary.

TRIP -B
Day = 1 Leave bangalore ealy morning and reach wyanad by aftenoon , and if time permits visit the safari and proceed towards kutta for night stay.
Day =2 Start early morning(6 am) for the jeep safari and visit irrupu falls and retire for the day.
I have given two alternative, probably i will work out a third one if possible.
If any information is required please post.
with regards.

Hi Taherk, Welcome to Indiamike My comments in Bold inline & also few general info in Non-Bold in the end

So we are planning to Start from bangalore --> Nagarhole --- > Wayanad

1. My question is can we also cover Coorg or Bandipur in this trip. ? Rather is it worth it. ? I guess we will get to see Irupu falls.

For 4 Days, you could very well try out Nagarhole + Iruppu Falls [ Both South coorg] + Tholpetty WLS [ 5 kms from Kutta and this is Wayanad] Followed by Thirunelli Temple [ Around 12 kms from Tholpetty WLS and this is in Wayanad]..

Bandipur is way - Off- The-Route in this itenary and after visiting Nagarahole, Bandipura might not impress you and the other problem with Bandipur Or Mudumalai is , the Never-ending tourist Crowd and it's always a big waiting time to get into the forest safari Vehicle and you won't believe , the Number of School and College Groups waiting for a trip ! ..

Coorg , Yes you could include as after thinking over your itenary, 1 night in Kutta or Iruppu Falls area and then you could get straight to Madikeri [ It's 84 kms from Nagarahole NP ] through scenic road & 2 nights in Madikeri [ 1 night stay for exploring Madikeri's tourist places ] and you could include Talacauvery for Scenic views and yes for the temple !.[ You could do a search with my id and I have shared some info on all of these]

2. After visiting Nagarhole NP, will the Wayanad wildlife / Bandipur be worth covering ?

No . In My opinion !

General:-

1. Wayanad if you want to add in-lieu of Coorg, that also could be done . [ 2 Days in wayanad]
2.Many of the places in Wayanad needs extensive trekking / Roughing out and hence you could take a call based on your group's comfort !.. If kids , ladies and older people are involved, you could stick yourself to Soochipara waterfalls / Chembara Peak base / Pookoot Lake / Thamaraserry Ghat view ! I shared few info here. Post #8 .

Wayanad Wildlife Tour
3.Hope you are very comfortable with Hill Driving as this entire Circuit especially Nagarahole-Kutta-Tholpetty-Thirunelli-Katrikulam-Mananthavadi Or Nagarahole-Kutta-Gonikoppa-Madikeri -Talacauvery need good driving skills as roads are with so many curves and at many places there are big holes on the Road-Sides ..Especially in Kutta-Tholpetty Or Kutta-Gonikoppal , if any bus comes in the opposite direction,it's best to stop and then proceed as getting down at even 40 km speed in few places could be very dangerous due to the Potholes on the road sides.
No Markings/ Signboards will be there for Curves and even for "Speed-Brakers" .. Please take care of all this when you embark on this journey !
4.It's not advisable to get down from your vehicle within Nagarahole NP .. it's really not advisable and even in Kutta-Thirunelli -Katrikulam Circuit you could avoid this ! [ Just for Elephants issue I am telling ] !!
5.In "Iruppu Falls" Or "Kutta " homestays, just check whether it's "Govt-Approved" before you decide !
6.If you come from Bangalore, try to take Mysore-HD Kote route to reach Nagarahole NP as it's all through best and also the road from HD Kote to Nagarahole NP is kind of "Off-the-Track" when compared to "Touristy Hunsur-Nagarahole NP route" !

Please post if you need more info !

P.S:- This is in addition to the nice write-ups by Suresh & Kumar ..!
Cheers

Thanks Velu.

I read other posts here and I have decided that we will goto Nagahole NP, Iruppu falls and then cover as much as we can in Wayanad.

Now the biggest question we have is where do we spend 2/3 nights?

JungleInn is good but slightly expensive. But if we pick a homestay around Kutta, that may be good as we dont have to worry about park timings and road being closed. What do you say? I

Any good homestay you know around Kutta.

Secondly I was wondering since Kabini river is nearby, can we take a safari maybe in water there ? Or is it only for the people who stay at one of the resorts there?

I am thinking of following itenerary

Day 1. Leave early from Blore - Arrive at Wayanad. do sightseeing
Day 2. Wayanad sightseeing . Yet to finalize
Day 3. Leave early morning goto Iruppu falls. Then catch the safari at Nagarhole NP at 3 PM.
Day 4. Take early morning safari / check if we can cover Kabini river area.

Any additions/deletions to above ?So we are thinking of going to Wayanad first then Nagarhole or should we do vice versa. ?

Is there any advantage of staying at Jungle Inn

Thanks a lot in advance. This forum is great

regards

JungleInn is good but slightly expensive. But if we pick a homestay around Kutta, that may be good as we dont have to worry about park timings and road being closed. What do you say?

If I remember correctly, there are 2 resorts on the way
[Around 10 to 15 kms ] before Nagarahole NP on Hunsur-Nagarahole NP road ..And I would say the location wise both are very normal only .. Compared to this road, Kutta or iruppu Falls is highly scenic and would be nice to stay .. I never stayed but you could try out "Chilligere Estate in Kutta"[ Recommended by other IMers] Or any of the homestays in Iruppu Falls region .. I would say, "Do not Reserve", Just go and see and whatever you like , Do a bargain and then could stay .

Secondly I was wondering since Kabini river is nearby, can we take a safari maybe in water there ? Or is it only for the people who stay at one of the resorts there?

No .As Far as i know.

I am thinking of following itenerary

Day 1. Leave early from Blore - Arrive at Wayanad. do sightseeing

Perfect . Take Bangalore-Mysore-Gundlupet-Muthanga WLS-Sulthan Bathery-Kalpetta .. You could stay in Kalpetta and explore all the places [ Around 80% of Wayanad tourist places are nearer to Kalpetta only]

Day 2. Wayanad sightseeing . Yet to finalize
As I told in my previous post, based on your group's composition take a call and any place and plan in wayanad is Worth !

Day 3. Leave early morning goto Iruppu falls. Then catch the safari at Nagarhole NP at 3 PM.

Perfect ! .. From Kalpetta, take the following road Kalpetta-Mananthavady-Katrikulam-Thirunelli temple-Tholeptty WLS-Kutta-Iruppu Falls. If you want to do evening safari, be there in Nagarahole NP Forest office @ Max 1 pm [There is only one Mazda kind of van for this safari] and it's better if you get packed lunch and buy tickets for this safari and have lunch out here .. If at all the Van is full , you need to wait for another 1 1/2 hours !

Day 4. Take early morning safari / check if we can cover Kabini river area.

Kabini Dam as such is not so great . From Nagarahole NP, you take HD kote road, and pass HD Kote Bus stand and drive straight and once you reach a 4 Road Junction, take Right and it's around 25 kms from this point ! ...

Kabini Backwaters is spreading upto KArapura [Where this JLR and CIcada are there] and as I said, I dont think we could try any on our own there ! If you try to visit this place , From HD Kote it's around 25 kms with last 7 kms in bad road !

Personally I feel, you could skip this and utilize your time in Wayanad ! Or If you have Tata Sumo Or Qualis kind of Vehicle, you could try out forest Safari in Tholpetty WLS on your own [Forest dept guard will accompany you] and if you have Mid Or Small Car , You could Hire a jeep just in front of Tholpetty WLS and do this safari

So we are thinking of going to Wayanad first then Nagarhole or should we do vice versa. ?

Both ways,it's fine and Equally good !

Cheers

Hello

If we take the Bangalore-Mysore-Gundlupet-Muthanga WLS-Sulthan Bathery-Kalpetta route, do we have to pay state tax twice, like one for Kerala and one for Tamil nadu ?

Thanks a lot for all your help so far

TK,

If you are planning in your own car, NO Road Tax involved . [ Just If at all if Traffic Policemen stops in Kerala[ Chances are very very rare thou] , have your Fuel Bill with Date from Karnataka on your day of Travel and show as proof.. As Per RTO Rules, Any State Vehicle can ply on any other state in India for upto Maximum of 12 Months [ This is for Own Vehicles] without paying any Extra "Road Tax" !!

And "Tamilnadu" will not come in that route which I Specified . It's Karnataka & Kerala only !

Hope this Helps

My Comments inline Indiran !..

This is starting on Dec 23rd early morning 4 AM and and returning back to chennai on Dec 28th late evening.

Approximately we have 4 Days to explore places leaving the starting Day and the day of return to chennai for Travel !

1. Is Chennai - Coorg - Wayanad or Chennai - Wayanad - Coorg. Which way should we go?

In My opinion, you could explore Wayanad first followed by Coorg.

2. How many days should we stay in coorg and wayanad with this available 6 days.

Stay wise, 2 Days in Wayanad , 2 Days in Coorg

3. I know Wayanad is 280 kms from Bangalore and Coorg is 230 kms from bangalore. what is the distance between coorg and wayanad?

Headquarters of Coorg is Madikeri and Headquarters of Wayanad is Kalpetta . From Madikeri to Kalpetta ,it will be around 140 kms !.. Other Important places in Wayanad is Mananthavady and Sulthan Battery [ Read Bathery] and in Coorg, Other Important tourist places are Iruppu Falls and Nagarahole NP .[ From Nagarhole NP to Mananthavady it's around 35 Kms Only.

4. Could you suggest me best itenary and if possible suggest me about accomodations and the places to see. FYI..We are nature lovers and not very adventurous guys..Any good place which is scenic and peaceful we wud love to go there..

Dec 23rd :-

Chennai-Vellore-NICE Road -Kengeri- [Kamath Hotel is famous for Veg.food]-Maddur-MAndya-Shrirangapatna [Could Explore Sangam , Tippu Summer palace, Tippu's Dungeon , Temple ] . After Exploring Shrirangapatna , Re-Join Shrirangapatna- Mysore road, Drive Straight towards Mysore and after 2 kms , take the right which will lead you to Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary- and get back 2 kms on the same road and this Road will take you to KRS Dam [Brindavan Gardens --> This is best between 5.30pm until 8.30pm]. Drive back to Mysore [18 kms] and retire for the day..

Dec 24th:-

From Mysore , Take Ooty road and drive via Nanjangudu [ This Shiva temple is very famous and just you need to take a De-tour of 1 km from the main road to visit this temple] [ Hint: Signboard will be there and you need to take left on a Railway Gate] .. Just before this place, you could see Kabini / Kabila River and a Single Railway Coach on display on a Old Bridge.. This is the OLDEST Railway bridge in India and during this dasara "Indian Railways" laid Metre Gauge from Nanjangudu to this Bridge and you could just stop for few minutes to see this bridge [ Built Around 1750 If I remember Correctly]. After Temple Visit, Re-Join the main road and drive straight towards Gundlupet [ For Food , you could try out in any of the Hotels before Gundlupet and they are ok and after this point no good hotels for some time]. Take right in Gundlupet and you will pass through Muthanga WLS [ Wayanad] --> Take out a Safari [Timings 6 - 9 am and 3 - 6 pm] and continue towards Kalpetta Via Sulthan Bathery . Retire for the day

Dec 25th:-

Visit all the Tourist Places in & Around Kalpetta like Soochipara waterfalls, Chembara PEak Base, Pookoot Lake, Lakkidi, Thamaraserry Ghat View Point [These are all Nice Scenic places where all ages can visit] and if you could stress out a bit you could try out Edakkal Caves etc... Retire for the day

Dec 26th:-

Start from Kalpetta, Drive towards MAnanthavadi and proceed towards Katrikulam. Here you will see "Welcome to Karnataka , Mysore 90 Kms" [ Here you need to take left and Don't ever drive Straight as that's PAthetic road for 30 kms in Jungles ].. You will see a Signboard <----- Thirunelli Temple 9 kms . You could take this left and Visit this temple [ This place is for scenic beauty more than the temple with Brahmagiri Mountain ranges in the back drop]] . Drive back to the main road and take left and drive towards Tholpetty WLS [ Again if you are interested, you could try out Safari here & Timings 6 - 9 am and 3 - 6 pm] .Once done, Drive toards Iruppu Falls Via Kutta .. You could find a Home stay in "Iruppu Falls" area and Retire for the day

Dec 27th:-

Morning, visit Iruppu Falls [.75 km Walk is required ] and then Proceed Towards Madikeri Via Gonikoppal [Around 75 kms ]. We Stayed in Hotel Mayura[ Karnataka Government Hotel next to Raja's seat and is good and budget.]. You Could explore the tourist places of Madikeri like Abbey Falls, Raja's Fort Followed by Raja's Seat in the evenings [ Best from 5 pm to 7.30 pm]. Retire for the day

Dec 28th:-

Start from Madikeri, Take Mysore Road and visit "Cauvery Nishadhama" and "Tibetan Settlements / Golden Temple " and proceed towards Mysore .This way you will reach mysore around 3 pm !.. May be Mysore Palace, Karanji Lake and Zoo and you could start back to chennai by 8 pm...

General :-

1. If you feel, on Dec 28th, you could visit "Talacauvery" for scenic beauty and for the religious importance attached to it from madikeri and backtrack to Mysore..

2. You could skip or extend your stay a bit in the places which you don't like / Like Most

Hope this helps..If you need more info, Please post !

hello,
Welcome to site.
trying to cover these areas in two-three days is near impossible in my opinion.
since you are not keen on visiting gardens, temples and zoos you can safely skip mysore and madikeri(coorg capital).but you wil miss the beautiful tibetian monastery and dubare elephant training camp(but dont worry you see more in jungle).

so in 2 nights /3 days- you can cover three parks namely rajiv gandhi national park (nagarhole),muthanga wildlife sanctuary and tholpetty wildlife sanctuary.
i think you have to settle for forest guest house at nagarhole as it might be the only thing that fits your budget .all other private hotels are quite outside and charge a lot. also route between nagarhole -wyanad goes through thick forest and i have sighted lots of elephants and deers early in morning 5 am -7 am.so try to do the journey early in morning or late in evening.
